From twinkling lights to the perfect hot cocoa recipe, here’s everything you need to create a warm, inviting holiday atmosphere. Grab a cup of something warm, and let’s get cosy!
9 Top Tips to Help You Create the Perfect Cosy Christmas at Home
Setting the Scene: Lighting and Decor
The right lighting can make or break that cosy Christmassy feeling. Think soft, warm lighting with a bit of twinkle and even scent:
- Fairy Lights Everywhere: String fairy lights around windows, drape them over bookshelves, or weave them through your Christmas tree. Battery-operated LED lights* are versatile and safe if you don’t have a plug socket nearby – some even come with a remote control.
- Candles for Days: Choose festive scents like cinnamon, pine, or gingerbread to make your home smell like Christmas as soon as you open the front door. Battery-operated candles* are also a great option if you want the look without the open flame.
- Layer with Lamps: Lamps provide soft, indirect light to keep things warm and inviting. Try placing lamps around the room at different heights – like table lamps, floor lamps, or even small lanterns. It’s an easy way to create a layered glow, perfect for holiday movie nights.
Decorate with Natural Elements
Bringing a bit of the outdoors in is key to creating that cosy, natural Christmas vibe.
- Garlands and Wreaths: Natural (or faux) garlands and wreaths* add instant Christmas spirit. Drape garlands along your staircase, mantle (if you’re not using your fire), or door frames. Look for ones with pine cones, berries, or eucalyptus for a rustic, festive touch. Why not buy an extendable curtain rod* for this year’s must have viral Christmas garland hack (head to Instagram for inspiration)?
- Mini Christmas Trees: If you’re a Christmas-tree lover, consider adding a few smaller ones around the house. Mini trees are super cute and can go in any room – including bedrooms. Just please make sure you choose a sustainable Christmas tree option, if you possibly can.
- Pine Cones and Greenery: Pine cones, sprigs of holly, and sprigs of greenery are easy, inexpensive ways to decorate. Scatter them on tables, around candles, or even in a decorative bowl.
The Perfect Christmas Tree
Your Christmas tree is the heart of holiday decor – here’s how to make it extra special:
- Pick a Theme: Whether you love traditional red and green, winter wonderland whites, or quirky colourful ornaments, pick a theme and stick to it. It makes your tree look pulled-together and intentional.
- Layered Lights: Start with lights to make your tree extra glowy. Layering different kinds (like twinkle lights and steady lights) adds depth and sparkle. Pro tip: work your way from the trunk out for the best light coverage.
- Meaningful Ornaments: Include ornaments with sentimental value – whether they’re family heirlooms, ones from childhood, or handmade decorations. Each one adds to the charm and cosiness of your tree.
Get Cosy with Textiles
Go hygge-style – nothing feels cosier than being wrapped up in soft, snuggly textiles* – perfect for making your home feel like one big blanket fort!
- Plaid and Flannel: Think about adding some plaid throws* or flannel pillows to your living room. Plaid is classic Christmas, and it instantly makes a space feel warm and festive.
- Soft Blankets: Keep a few blankets in easy-to-grab spots, like on the couch or over the back of a chair. Faux fur, chunky knit, or fleece blankets* are perfect for snuggling up with family.
- Festive Pillows: Add a few holiday-themed throw pillows to your couch or bed. Look for ones with fun sayings like “Let it Snow” or “Merry & Bright.” You can even make your own if you’re feeling crafty, embroidered with a short Christmas quote or festive saying.
Set Up a Hot Cocoa Bar
Nothing says “cosy Christmas” quite like a hot chocolate station. Follow these tips to set up a simple but impressive hot cocoa bar.
- Start with the Basics: Gather different kinds of hot chocolate mix or cocoa powder, including white chocolate if you’re feeling fancy. If you have a favourite hot cocoa recipe, make a big batch and keep it warm in a crockpot or on the stovetop. Just before serving, add a shot of Baileys for a truly memorable hot chocolate – adults only!
- Fun Add-Ins: Marshmallows, whipped cream, candy canes, chocolate shavings, and sprinkles are all must-haves. Set these out in small jars or bowls for a café-style hot cocoa bar.
- Festive Mugs: Bring out your favourite holiday mugs*, the more festive, the better. Mugs with snowmen, reindeer, or Christmas trees make it feel extra special.
Bake Some Christmas Treats
Because nothing fills a home with holiday warmth quite like fragrance of home baking. Set aside a day to bake some of your favourite Christmas treats.
- Cookies: Sugar cookies, gingerbread, and peppermint bark are classics for a reason. They’re not just delicious; they also make your home smell amazing.
- Baking with Family: If you have kids, consider baking together as a family. It’s a wonderful way to make memories and create a sense of holiday cosiness.
- Christmas Cookie Jar: Keep a jar of cookies* on the counter for easy access throughout the holiday season. It’s such a simple touch, but it adds that “Christmas at home” vibe.
Create a Cosy Holiday Playlist
No cosy Christmas setup is complete without the right music. Put together a playlist of all your holiday favourites – think Bing Crosby, Mariah Carey, Michael Bublé, and Nat King Cole. Play it softly in the background throughout the day, or turn it up for a Christmas karaoke session!
If you’re not sure where to start, most streaming services have great holiday playlists ready to go. I have our Alexa* playing Christmas music from 1st December every year, switching to Carols from Kings on Christmas Day. But you could create different playlists for different vibes: one for baking, one for decorating, and one for relaxing by the fire.
Plan Family Activities
Sometimes, the most memorable parts of Christmas are the simple traditions. Here are a few fun activities that will bring everyone together and add to that cosy atmosphere:
- Christmas Movie Marathon: Spend a day (or two, or three…) watching classic Christmas movies. The Polar Express, Elf, and Home Alone are eternal family favourites.
- Christmas Crafting: Try some easy holiday crafts, like making paper snowflakes, decorating ornaments, or creating a gingerbread house. We have some homemade Christmas decorations from a few years ago and they’re still going strong.
- Board Games and Puzzles: On a chilly winter day, nothing’s cosier than a family game or puzzle marathon. Gather around the table with hot cocoa and work on a holiday-themed puzzle*, or challenge each other to a few rounds of a favourite board game.
Give the Gift of Warmth
Lastly, here’s a simple tip: keep extra blankets, cosy socks, and slippers around for guests. It’s a small gesture that makes everyone feel instantly at home. And if you’re looking for little gift ideas, cosy items like blankets, fuzzy socks, or holiday-scented candles make perfect stocking stuffers or hostess gifts.

We do a lot of puzzles at Christmas. Some are seasonal, but some are just lovely puzzles. I mostly do puzzles at Christmas time, as it seems the most appropriate time of year for that.
Yes, it’s lovely to have the time to do some puzzling, leave it, come back to it, and finish it at your leisure.
Ah yes all these tips are spot on! I just started decorating for the holidays I got my tree last I got it up and the lights on and I am going to do the trimming this weekend. We put all our decorations up last weekend too, just a few bits and pieces left to do this weekend. And sadly, no, it’s not my space (I wish!), it’s a stock photo. 🙂
