6 Simple Autumn Self-Care Ideas Worth Making Time For *

15th October 2026      Lisa      Leave a Comment

AD | There’s something lovely about the turn into autumn. The light softens, the evenings get cosier, and there’s a natural pull towards slowing down after a summer that (usually) always seems to go by too quickly.

It’s also a season that makes self-care feel a little more achievable. When the weather invites us to spend more time indoors, it’s the perfect opportunity to reset a few routines, make time for the little things we enjoy, and give ourselves permission to slow down. Autumn self-care doesn’t have to involve an expensive spa day or an elaborate new routine, either. Sometimes, the smallest changes make the biggest difference.

Here are some simple ideas for looking after yourself as the days get shorter.

Contents

  • 1. Adjust Your Skincare Before Your Skin Complains
  • 2. Make The Evenings Something To Look Forward To
  • 3. Keep Moving, Even When It’s Grey
  • 4. Get Into The Garden One Last Time
  • 5. Don’t Save The Nice Things For Best
  • 6. Sort Out Your Sleep
  • 7. What Are Your Autumn Self-Care Essentials?

Adjust Your Skincare Before Your Skin Complains

The drop in humidity and the return of central heating can be hard on skin, and most of us wait until things feel tight and uncomfortable before doing anything about it.

Get ahead of it. Swap a lightweight summer moisturiser for something richer, and consider adding a facial oil at night if your skin tends towards dryness. Keep using SPF, because UV exposure doesn’t disappear when the sun does. Lips and hands are usually the first to suffer, so it’s worth having something decent within reach rather than whatever’s been rattling around at the bottom of your bag since March.

Autumn is also a good time to take stock of your routine. You might not need to replace everything in your bathroom cabinet; simply adding a nourishing hand cream beside the kitchen sink, or keeping lip balm in your coat pocket, can make everyday skincare that little bit easier.

Make The Evenings Something To Look Forward To

The shorter days are only a downside if you let them be. If you reframe them slightly, they can become permission to enjoy your own home in a way that summer never quite allows.

Light the side lamps rather than the big central light, get a cosy blanket out, and pick something you actually want to read or watch. Put the kettle on, make your favourite hot drink, or spend twenty minutes on a hobby you never seem to have time for during the busier months.

There’s a real difference between an evening that happens to you and one you’ve deliberately set aside for yourself. Small rituals, done consistently, can do far more for how you feel than the occasional grand gesture. You don’t need to turn every evening into a perfectly curated cosy scene, either. The point is to find little ways to make day-to-day life feel more enjoyable and your autumn self-care more manageable.

Keep Moving, Even When It’s Grey

Motivation dips as the weather turns, which is precisely when regular movement matters most. The trick is lowering the bar rather than raising it.

A brisk twenty-minute walk after lunch counts. So does a short stretch in the morning, a gentle yoga session in the living room, or a swim once a week. You don’t have to maintain an ambitious summer fitness routine if it no longer fits your schedule or the weather.

Getting outside in daylight can also help boost your mood through the autumn months. If mornings feel particularly gloomy, try heading out during your lunch break instead. And if it’s pouring with rain, don’t feel guilty about swapping your usual walk for something indoors. Consistency matters more than perfection.

Get Into The Garden One Last Time

Autumn is one of the most rewarding times in the garden, and it’s far more pleasant working outside than the height of summer, when everything needs watering every day.

Plant spring bulbs now and you’ll be thanking yourself in March. Cut back what’s finished flowering, leaving a few seed heads for the birds, and give the borders a good mulch. Even if you only have a few pots on a balcony, there are still jobs to enjoy, from planting seasonal containers to clearing away tired summer bedding.

There’s something genuinely restorative about an afternoon of pottering and tidying up outside, and unlike most self-care advice, you have something to show for it afterwards. You also get a welcome dose of fresh air and a break from screens, which is no bad thing when the temptation to spend the whole weekend indoors becomes stronger.

Don’t Save The Nice Things For Best

This is the one I have to remind myself of most often. The good candle, the nice bath oil, the bottle of perfume that’s been sitting there, waiting for an occasion that never quite arrives.

Use them. An ordinary Tuesday is reason enough. Fragrance, in particular, is one of the easiest small luxuries to enjoy day-to-day, and a scent you love can lift your mood on a grey morning when little else seems to be going your way. Autumn is also a good moment to switch to something a little warmer and richer than whatever you wore through the summer too.

The same goes for the lovely mug you keep at the back of the cupboard, the expensive chocolate you’ve been saving, or the book you bought months ago and haven’t opened. You don’t need a special occasion to enjoy something that makes you happy.

Sort Out Your Sleep

As the clocks change and the mornings get darker, sleep can go a bit sideways for a lot of us. A consistent bedtime helps more than anything else, dull as that might sound.

Keep your bedroom cool, put your phone somewhere other than the bedside table, and give yourself half an hour to wind down before you actually want to be asleep. Reading a few pages, listening to something relaxing, or taking a warm shower can help signal that the day is coming to an end.

Getting outside in daylight is key too, as natural light helps keep your sleep-wake cycle on track. And if you find yourself feeling sluggish as autumn progresses, be kind to yourself. Shorter days can affect our energy levels, so focus on building habits that support you rather than expecting to operate at full speed all the time.

What Are Your Autumn Self-Care Essentials?

Self-care doesn’t need to become another item on an already overwhelming to-do list. It’s about finding small, realistic ways to feel a little better, whether that means looking after your skin, choosing a new fragrance to boost your mood, getting outside, enjoying a slower evening, or finally using the lovely things you’ve been saving “for best.”

I’d love to know what makes this season feel manageable for you. Is it a particular routine, a walk you always do, or simply the excuse to stay in more? Tell me what you’re looking forward to most this autumn.

🌈 Our beloved hobo has taken his last journey. Yes 🌈 Our beloved hobo has taken his last journey. Yesterday evening we had to say farewell to Ginger at nearly 21 years old.

13 years ago he wandered into our greenhouse and decided ours was his new home. So many memories:

😻 He saw us through Buzz, Lily, and Jester, and the arrivals of Spooky, Loki, and Lyra.
😻 Always the most chilled cat, not interested in fighting any other cats, ours or visitors.
😻 Greediest cat ever, not even willing to share with the resident hedgehogs. He could hear the sound of someone walking into the kitchen from 5 miles away.
😻 An inveterate bin diver – our neighbours got used to seeing their recycling spread across the road after he’d gone searching for food.
😻 Always commandeering the warmest spot in the garden or house.
😻 Putting up with Spooky always seeking him out and snuggling up with him.
😻Somehow generating more heat than a volcano, so we could never tolerate him on our laps for more than 10 minutes, we’d have to move him next to us instead.
😻 Always knowing when any of us needed comfort or company and snuggling up to offer purring support.

RIP, Ginger, thank you for choosing us, we were privileged to have you as part of our family, and you leave the biggest hole in all our hearts. 😿

If you don’t have any of these perennials in your outside space, you’re missing a trick.

Happy in pots, baskets, and the ground, ours have survived frost, snow and can’t be beaten for fabulously cheerful pops of colour at this time of year. Highly recommended! 👌
