AD | For many women, taking off their bra at the end of a long day is a welcome relief. The restraints of an underwire or tight straps finally come off and it feels liberating. But is it a good idea to sleep without a bra on? There are pros and cons to consider when deciding whether or not to wear a bra to bed.
Benefits of Not Wearing a Bra to Bed
It’s More Comfortable
For most women, bras are simply not comfortable. The straps dig into your shoulders, the band squeezes your ribcage, and underwires press into your breast tissue. At the end of a long day, taking off an uncomfortable bra is a blessing. Sleeping without a bra can be much more comfortable and lets your body fully relax. Your breasts will feel less restricted and can move naturally as you change positions during sleep.
It Allows Your Breasts to “Breathe”
When you wear a bra, it covers and compresses your breast tissue. At night, going braless gives the skin under and around your breasts a chance to breathe and air out. This may help prevent skin irritation, rashes, and breakouts. Allowing your breast skin exposure to the open air can also have a drying effect, reducing any moisture build up that can come from sweat during the day.
It Prevents Bra Indentations
Have you ever taken off your bra at the end of the day only to see red indentations and marks where the bra was touching your skin? These indentations are caused by pressure from your bra straps, wires, seams, etc. When you sleep braless, you prevent any bra markings from forming overnight. This allows your skin to fully recover and will reduce the appearance of any indentations in the morning when you put your bra back on.
It Could Make Your Breasts Perkier
Some experts suggest that going braless at night may actually provide benefits like keeping breasts perkier over time. When breasts are not constrained in a bra 24/7, it allows ligaments and breast tissue to strengthen and regain their elasticity after being restricted all day. Think of it like giving your breasts a “break” from bras so they have a chance to lift back up.
Drawbacks of Not Wearing a Bra to Bed
Lack of Support for Large Breasts
For women with large, heavy breasts, lack of support from a bra can be uncomfortable. The weight of larger breasts can pull down on the ligaments, potentially causing neck and back pain. Trying to sleep without support for heavy breasts can be painful. For larger-breasted women, a more supportive sleep bra may be preferable.
Nighttime Leakage
Some women experience leakage from their nipples during sleep, which can happen with hormonal changes or if you’re breast feeding. Sleeping without a bra allows any leakage to get onto your bedding and nightclothes. Wearing a comfortable sleep bra can absorb any leaks and prevent messes on your sheets.
Discomfort From Movement
Without the support of a bra, your breasts may move and sway uncomfortably as you change positions in bed. This movement can disrupt your sleep or even wake you up. For some women, a bra limits this motion so they can sleep soundly through the night.
Irritation Between Breasts
Letting your breasts press together braless can lead to skin irritation and rashes forming in the cleavage area overnight. The heat and moisture generated in between your breasts as you sleep without a bra can cause chafing. A bra creates a barrier between your breasts, preventing this irritation.
Hard Nipples Showing Through Clothes
Some women experience erect nipples when they sleep without a bra on, and this may still be noticeable when you put clothes on in the morning. If you want to prevent headlights from poking through your top first thing after getting dressed, you may want to wear a sleep bra at night.
What Type of Bra is Best for Sleeping?
If you decide sleeping braless is not for you, wearing the right type of bra to bed is key. Here are the best options for comfortable sleep bras:
- Wireless Bras – Avoid underwires digging into you at night. Look for wireless bras without metal underwires for the best comfort.
- Soft, Stretch Fabrics – Bras for sleep should have soft, flexible fabrics like cotton or modal that move with your body. Stay away from stiff, rigid fabrics that restrict movement.
- Loose Band – The bra band should not squeeze or constrict your ribcage. Find a bra with a wide, loose band for relaxation. Adjustable hooks allow you to expand as needed.
- Thin Straps – Thick bra straps can irritate your shoulders as you sleep. Look for bras with thin, adjustable straps for the least pressure.
- Comfortable Cups – Avoid push-up pads or moulded cups. Soft cups that do not tightly confine the breasts are ideal for rest.
- Front Close – Sleep bras that close in the front are easier to take on and off than bras that close in back. Front close makes nighttime bathroom trips simpler.
- Moisture Wicking – If you experience breast leakage or sweat a lot, sleep bras with moisture wicking fabrics can help you stay dry and comfortable.

Other Tips for Comfortable Sleep
Your bra choice is not the only factor for a comfortable night’s sleep. Here are some additional tips:
- Apply Moisturiser – Hydrate breast skin with moisturising cream before bed to prevent dryness if you sleep braless.
- Wear a Camisole – A stretchy camisole provides light support and keeps breasts contained if not wearing a bra.
- Use a Silky Pillowcase – Silk or satin pillowcases reduce friction on your breast skin as you move around.
- Clean Bedding – Keep bra indentations away by washing your sheets frequently to avoid build up of dirt, oil and bacteria.
- Shower Before Bed – A warm shower opens pores, removes sweat, and promotes relaxation for better sleep.
- Room Temperature – Keep your bedroom cool to prevent overheating and sweat. Around 18-21°C is ideal.
- Sleep Position – Avoid sleeping completely flat on your stomach, as this can be uncomfortable without a bra. Side or back positions may work better.
- Mattress Support – Use a firm mattress and supportive pillows to keep your head, neck and back aligned.
The Bottom Line – Should You Wear a Bra to Bed or Not?
There is no definitive answer to whether you should or should not wear a bra to bed. Every woman is different in terms of breast size, comfort needs, physical issues, and personal preferences. The best approach is to test it out and see what makes you feel best. Try both sleeping with and without a bra for several nights, then opt for what gives you greater relaxation and the most restful sleep. Listen to your body’s cues. Your comfort is what matters most.
Do you wear – or have you ever worn – a bra to bed? If so, how did you find it? If not, would you consider wearing one now?

I really appreciate you taking the time to tackle an infrequently discussed topic. I especially enjoyed your list of pros and cons. The Camisole and silky pillowcase tips were also very helpful!
Thank you, Heidi. I can personally vouch for a silk pillowcase, it’s been a game changer for me 🙂
What a great, in-depth post. I just do what I’ve always done, but I hadn’t really thought through all of the ins-and-outs, so this is helpful.
That’s great, I’m so pleased it was helpful!
I’ve wondered this myself, I notice I sleep better when I accidentally fall asleep in a bra. The ones you’ve listed are cute! I’ll have to check them out. Thank you for bringing up this conversation.
Oh, that’s interesting, thank you, I’m so pleased you enjoyed the post.
I love that you hit these important topics for women that aren’t always brought up! I will say I haven’t worn a bra to bed since I can remember. I don’t like the pressure it puts on the body or the indentations. What I didn’t think of the is it helps prevent neck pain to have support…thank you for providing a list of Bras to try too!
Thank you, Marie. I know what you mean about indentations, but there are a lot of sleep bras that don’t have wire and are really comfortable – I had one when I was nursing my daughter and it was fab!
