How To Make The Most of Your Copenhagen to Helsingør Coastal Ride *

28th September 2025      Lisa      Leave a Comment

AD | Few cities make it as easy to leave the urban buzz behind as Copenhagen. Just north of the city centre, you can join one of Denmark’s most popular cycling routes — the Copenhagen to Helsingør coastal ride. This scenic 45-kilometer stretch follows the Øresund Strait, passing beaches, harbours, and royal landmarks before ending at Kronborg Castle, famously known as the home of Hamlet.

Leaving Copenhagen Behind

Start at Nyhavn or the Langelinie promenade, where you can take a photo stop at the Little Mermaid before setting off. The route follows a mix of bike paths and quiet coastal roads, making it safe and enjoyable for cyclists of all levels.

Within minutes, the city gives way to seaside suburbs with colourful houses, leafy parks, and small marinas. Even the air feels fresher as you follow the water’s edge, with Sweden visible just across the strait.

Seaside Stops Along the Route

The first major stop is Charlottenlund Fort, a historic military fort turned seaside park. Continue north to Bellevue Beach, a popular summer swimming spot with sleek modernist lifeguard towers designed by Arne Jacobsen.

Farther along, Dyrehaven — the Deer Park — offers a peaceful detour through a UNESCO-listed landscape park. Keep an eye out for herds of free-roaming deer as you ride under centuries-old oak trees.

For a coffee break, stop in Klampenborg or Skodsborg, where cosy cafés overlook the coast.

Cultural Highlights of the Copenhagen to Helsingør Coastal Ride

As you approach Helsingør, the cultural highlights multiply. Make time to stop at Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebæk — one of Denmark’s best museums, with a sculpture park and panoramic sea views.

Closer to town, you’ll pass small fishing harbours and beaches before reaching Kronborg Castle, the final reward of the ride. The castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the setting for Shakespeare’s Hamlet. You can take a guided tour of the halls and ramparts before relaxing on the grass with an ice cream from the harbour.

Food and Drink

The Copenhagen to Helsingør coastal ride gives you plenty of opportunities to sample Danish seaside fare. Look for harbourside smokehouses serving herring, salmon, and shrimp on rye bread, or grab a soft ice cream cone — a local favourite on summer rides.

Picnic spots abound, so packing your own lunch is also a great option. In Helsingør, you can enjoy a celebratory meal at one of the harbour restaurants before catching the train back to Copenhagen.

Combining Cycling with Longer Holidays

This ride works as a perfect day trip, but it can also be extended into a multi-day itinerary. Continue beyond Helsingør by taking the ferry to Helsingborg in Sweden for a cross-border adventure, or loop back through the countryside for a change of scenery.

Many Denmark bike tours include this coastal route as a highlight, combining it with rides through North Zealand’s castle country. For travellers planning longer Denmark cycling holidays, this route serves as an ideal first stage before continuing toward Gilleleje, the Kattegat Route, or even multi-day island-hopping trips through Funen and Lolland.

Best Time to Ride

Late spring through early autumn is the ideal time for this trip, with long daylight hours and mild weather. Summer brings a lively atmosphere, with swimmers at every beach and plenty of open cafés.

In autumn, the route is quieter, and the golden light along the coast is spectacular. Even winter rides can be rewarding — just dress warmly and be prepared for brisk sea breezes!

Practical Tips

The route is well-marked and mostly flat, making it accessible to all levels. If you don’t want to ride the full distance both ways, the easiest option is to take the train back — bikes are allowed on Danish trains, and services run frequently.

Bring a windproof jacket, as the sea breeze can be strong even on sunny days. A small lock is useful for museum or café stops, and sunscreen is a must during long summer rides.

A Perfect Danish Day Out

Cycling the Copenhagen to Helsingør coastal ride is one of the most rewarding day trips in Denmark. The mix of coastal scenery, cultural stops, and small seaside towns creates a route that feels both active and relaxing.

Whether you ride solo, with friends, or make it part of longer Denmark cycling holidays, this journey captures the essence of Danish life — combining outdoor activity, design, history, and the simple pleasure of stopping for coffee with a sea view.

Exercise combines with relaxation, does this coastal cycle ride sound like the perfect mix to you too?

Aka Common Laccaria, Waxy Laccaria, Lackluster Laccaria, Deceiver, apparently they’re edible. But as I’m not a fungi expert, I don’t think I’ll be harvesting them for mushrooms on toast any time soon!

If you don’t have any of these perennials in your outside space, you’re missing a trick.

Happy in pots, baskets, and the ground, ours have survived frost, snow and can’t be beaten for fabulously cheerful pops of colour at this time of year. Highly recommended! 👌

And to prune them hard, taking lots of cuttings for new plants. I do this every year, and my plant loving friends all know what they’ll be getting in due course! 💖

Great value though, she’s been flowering for months - an absolute bargain supermarket buy from a few years ago, and proof you really don’t need to spend a lot on plants. 🌹
