Exercising Mindfully – 6 Surprising Benefits of Mindfulness in Fitness

10th December 2023      Lisa      12 Comments

Mindfulness is becoming ever more closely linked with the fitness industry these days, mainly because of its amazing benefits in improving your exercise mindset. Yes, tuning into your favourite gym playlist while running or doing a strenuous work out is easy. But exercising mindfully can help make your routines more productive and beneficial in the longer term. Here are some of the ways the power of mindfulness can improve your fitness journey.

6 Surprising Benefits of Exercising Mindfully

Enhanced Mental Health

There are myriad reports online showing how beneficial mindfulness can be to overall mental health. Such as using mindfulness to focus entirely on your workouts and ignore any distractions around you. You’ll improve your coping skills and be able to deal better with any negative thoughts as well. For example, even five minutes of meditation can significantly improve both your quality of life and your mindset about everything you do.

With better mental health and mindset, you’ll also find it easier to complete your fitness goals and turn looking after your health into a good daily habit. Mindfulness allows you to zero in on even the shortest workout routines to make sure you do them right. And it can help you set clear intentions for maximum benefits. Mindfulness practitioners tend to have a more peaceful state of mind, making it easier for them to focus on the current moment and feel more rewarded.

Self-Awareness

Exercising mindfully also empowers you to become more aware of yourself. You’ll understand better how your body works and what you need to do to keep it in the best shape possible. Incorporating mindfulness into your fitness routine can also help you realise which workouts are best for you. And if you’re a fitness newbie, why not start out as you mean to go on and get into healthier mental and physical habits from day one?

Mindful people are connected to their mind-body mechanism and can react quickly to bodily cues. You’ll likely find you have a clearer understanding of your emotions, weaknesses, and strengths, both physically and mentally. So, you’ll almost certainly find it easier to choose and customise a workout that’s tailored for you and fulfils your needs.

Physical Wellness

Working out after understanding everything about your body makes you more likely to hit your fitness goals. Mindful people tend to be more successful at focusing attention while exercising and making better health-related decisions. Other advantages of exercising mindfully include a better heart rate, lower BMI, and more.

Practitioners have also said mindfulness makes them more optimistic about their physical health and look at their bodies positively. Mindfulness can also help reduce blood pressure and improve sleep quality, significantly enhancing your quality of life. When you think about it, taking the time to understand your physical health and looking inside to see what else can help makes perfect sense, doesn’t it?

Motivation

The main reason many of us fail in our fitness journeys is down to lack of motivation to exercise. Working out often takes a backseat to everything else going on in our lives, and it can be really hard to have to dig deep for the motivation to head to the gym, or strap on your running shoes when it’s cold.

Exercising mindfully improves your concentration levels, gives you positive energy and motivation, and helps you make the positive behavioural changes you need to remember your “why.” This makes it easier to stay on track for reaching your fitness goals, even when you’re tired or having a bad day.

Restful Nights

Working out regularly means you need to get as much sleep and rest as your body needs, as well as time to recover. Physical rest will allow you to replenish your energy and a well-rested mind means you’ll be able to focus better when you start exercising again, so you’ll achieve better results. Mindfulness exercises such as breathing and meditation are often recommended for improving sleep quality.

Mindful Eating

Nutrition plays an essential role in fitness because you need to eat the right food to fuel your body for regular workouts. Mindful eating is all about noticing every detail of your food, including taste, texture, and health benefits. Being aware of what you put in your body and why allows you to be more informed about your eating decisions.

Even if you have the best fitness routine in the world (!), you still need to support it with good food habits to see positive changes. Mindful eating helps you develop a better relationship with your food, and understand the emotional reasons behind why you reach for certain items. Once you’re in tune with your reasons and triggers, you’ll be able to focus more easily on the benefits of healthy eating, and in turn you’ll find it much easier to hit your fitness goals.

How do you like to exercise? Do you switch on your favourite playlist to help you power through? Or do you take a more holistic approach to keep you on track? Have you ever used mindfulness in your fitness routines? If not, is exercising mindfully something you might try now?

I can see how adding this element to a fitness routine can be really beneficial, it puts a focus on something beyond the physical and probably takes exercising to a new level. Very interesting read and useful info!

This is exactly why I love Yoga so much. Every time I get on the mat, it helps me get out of my head and into my body and really FEEL what I’m feeling. How my body actually feels in that moment. I don’t think I could exercise in any other way anymore xx
