We all know exercising brings lots of benefits, but not everyone has time to go to the gym, or work out for hours. Other things in life take priority – usually family and work. Fortunately, if you still want to reap the benefits of exercise but in less time, these 10-minute workouts for busy people might just fit the bill. And they’re not only for people with a hectic lifestyle either, they’re perfect for those of us who find exercise boring (like me!).
Why Short Workouts Can Be Better
Disclaimer: I’m not a health professional but from my research, short workouts can be more effective for a few reasons. Firstly, they’re easier to fit into a busy schedule, making it easier to exercise on a regular basis – consistency is key. Secondly, they often involve higher intensity exercises, which can lead to greater calorie burn and improved cardiovascular fitness. Lastly, shorter more mindful workouts reduce the chances of boredom or burnout, keeping you more motivated in the long run (true story).
10 Minute Workouts for Busy People at Home with No Equipment Necessary
Whether you exercise in the morning, at lunchtime, or in the evening, here are 7 “Micro Workouts” you can do in less than 10 minutes as part of a healthy lifestyle. And the best part is you don’t need any equipment either, so you can do them inside your home or benefit from exercising outside in nature as you prefer.
If you’d like to see any of these workout steps in action before you try them, head to YouTube for lots of inspiration. Personally, I’d recommend checking out UK’s favourite Body Coach, Joe Wicks – who can forget his Monday-Friday PE With Joe sessions during the COVID lockdown!
Just remember, you should always warm up before you start, and then cool down afterwards. Never head straight into exercise without getting the blood flowing first – try some gentle stretching movements or a brisk walk.
10-Minute Full Body Workout
- Bodyweight Squats
- Push-ups
- Plank with T-Rotation
- Alternating Standing Oblique Crunches
If you want to exercise both your upper body and lower body, this workout is perfect. Especially if you don’t have time to shower afterwards, because it won’t make you sweat too much. Experts suggest doing each exercise for 2 minutes each and taking at least a 30-second break. This allows you to work most major muscle groups and gain the most health benefits while saving time.
10-Minute Beginner Workout
- 5 Push-Ups
- 10 Squats
- 16 Plank Taps
- 20 Jumping Jacks
This fitness routine is perfect if you’re just starting to work out, want to get your heart rate up, but don’t want any complex routines to follow. It’s also a good idea to rest for at least 45 minutes between every workout ,or less if you want to challenge your body more.
10-Minute AMRAP Workout
- 15 Burpees
- 20 Up-Down Planks
- 20 Alternating Reverse Lunges
AMRAP stands for “As Many Reps as Possible,” where you repeat these three exercises as many times as possible within the time limit you set yourself. This workout helps you do both cardio and strength training, and you can customise it according to your requirements.
The idea is you try to beat your daily record by doing more reps as you become healthier, and your performance improves. AMRAP is ideal for those of us who don’t want to do too many different exercises at once but still want to work on the core parts of our bodies.
10-Minute Cardio Workout – Heavy Set
- Mock Jumping Rope
- Burpee With Push-Up
- Squat Jump
- Plank Taps
- Jumping Lunge
For all cardio lovers, this cardio blast is perfect to start your morning off. Beginners can start with doing each exercise for 30 seconds with a 30-second break between sets. As your body becomes more used to it, you can increase the intensity and do each set for 50 seconds. You can also vary the intensity depending on how your body feels or what mood you’re in that day.
10-Minute Jump Rope Workout
- Warm-up: 60 seconds of easy rope-jumping
- 6 x 60 seconds of fast rope jumping plus 30 seconds of easy rope jumping.
Rope jumping is one of the most fun, effective, and easiest ways to carry out some quick exercise, even during busy work and family days. Perfect for beginners, it’s one of the best 10-minute workouts for busy people as it’s an excellent cardiovascular workout from home to train your core, calves, hamstrings, etc. And if you don’t own a jump rope, don’t let that hold you back – use your imagination and visualise yourself jumping over an invisible rope instead!
10-Minute Bodyweight Workout
- Jump Squats
- Push-Ups with Shoulder Taps
- Crossover Mountain Climbers
- Burpees
- Up-Down Plank
There’s a common misconception that you need gym equipment to do a bodyweight workout. But you can do this workout anywhere you like, as long as you warm up first – try 50-60 seconds of jumping jacks. Doing two rounds of this bodyweight workout shouldn’t then take up too much of your time during the day.
10-Minute Total Body Strength Workout
- 8 Squat Thrusts
- 8 Squat Jumps
- 8 Reverse Lunges with Twists
- 8 Tricep Dips
- 8 Bent-Over Rows
This workout is for those of us who want to train each body part inside a set time limit. Usually, body strength workouts are quite time-consuming but completing this short set every day will definitely help take you closer to your fitness goals. Just make sure you rest for at least 60 seconds before starting your next set.
Do 10-Minute Workouts Actually Work, and Will They Make a Difference?
Absolutely! While they might not turn you into a superhero overnight, 10-minute workouts for busy people can still pack a punch. They’re a fantastic way to stay active, boost your mood, and maintain a consistent exercise routine, especially on busy days. It’s all about making the most out of those 10 minutes and keeping the intensity up. Here are a few more reasons to incorporate them into your fitness regime.
You Can Do a 10-Minute Workout Every Day
A quick 10-minute daily workout can do wonders for your emotional, mental, and physical health. It can help lower your blood pressure and weight, balance your “good” and “bad” cholesterol levels, and manage your diabetes too. It’s all about finding the right balance between staying active and not overwhelming yourself. Up to 3 of these separate workouts a day would be amazing but do go at your own pace.
A 10-Minute Workout Can Aid Weight Loss
While it might not burn as many calories as longer sessions, it can still contribute to weight loss, especially if you make those 10 minutes intense. Short workouts are more sustainable for some people, making it more likely they’ll stick to their fitness routine.
10 Minutes Can Help to Build Muscle
Ten minutes isn’t the ideal workout length for building substantial muscle mass, but it can be a good start. Think quality over quantity: the key is intensity and focusing on compound exercises that engage multiple muscle groups. If you can consistently do short, intense workouts, as one of your good daily habits, you’ll more likely see progress over time.
Which of These 10-Minute Workouts for Busy People Will You Choose?
Time is precious, and these short exercise routines offer lots of benefits. From boosting metabolism and improving cardiovascular health to enhancing mood and productivity, your tiny investment in time can yield so many returns for your overall well-being. You can do this! Which one (or more!) of these 10-minute workouts can you see yourself incorporating into your self-care routine now?
Do you exercise every day? Are you a fan of short workouts or do you prefer a longer exercise routine? What’s your favourite way to incorporate exercise into your lifestyle?

These quick and effective workouts are potential game-changers for busy schedules! Love the simplicity and no-equipment approach – ideal for squeezing in a burst of energy during hectic days. Though I question the 5 push ups and 10 squats for a beginner like myself. Wait, do you have a beginner-beginner option? Haha
That’s my hope, I wanted something that could be done quickly but still be effective! Although I do know what you mean about the push ups, my arms are quite weedy so I’d struggle with those initially too 🙂
Thank you for these great suggestions. Everyone has 10 minutes throughout the day and these seem like they would be impactful workouts.
Thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed the article.
Fitting in shorter workouts is so important. It’s always better to do something than nothing! I use YouTube for mostly all of my Yoga and workouts and there are some excellent short and snappy workouts that get the heart-rate up and blood pumping that don’t take all day!
Hooray for short workouts, I hadn’t thought of yoga though, so that’s very useful, thank you, Jenny!
I have found this really useful as I would like to find some shorter routines to follow to get me back into working out again as I have not been as regular about it. These are great for busy people and those of us who need to get back to moving a bit more; I’m looking forward to doing a few of these throughout the day!

That’s how I began on my fitness journey by working out 15-20 minutes at home. The important thing is to move our body.
Absolutely, moving a little every day is the way to go.
Thanks for sharing, these easy and quick workouts, for busy people, I do find spending time looking after my patio plants to be enough short workouts as moving them when it has rained is enough lifting for me!!
That made me smile – I feel you, I have to do the same whenever we have inclement weather!
These are brilliant, thank you! I often don’t feel I’ve got time to exercise after work etc but these can easily be fitted in around busy schedules!
You’re very welcome, I’m so pleased my post was helpful – I don’t exercise after work, but breaking up the day (before lunch) works perfectly for me 🙂
