Quick & Affordable Ways to Modernize Your Bedroom
Declutter
Before you start thinking about new fixtures, bed sizes, linen, and everything in between, you should first declutter. One of the hallmarks of a modern space is that it’s free of “unnecessary” things, with the focus placed on statement pieces instead.
Look through your room and make two piles; one with the things that improve the space, and the other with the things that can be better used elsewhere in your home. From there, you can decorate accordingly.
Be Smart with Color
Next, you may want to update or improve the color scheme of the room. Adding pops of color can help elevate the space, and to keep costs down, you can do something like painting one wall, creating color blocks, or using paint to accentuate doorways or arches.
If you’re renting and can’t paint, you can incorporate pops of color by adding a colorful throw cushion or two, a piece of art, or a carpet or rug of some kind. Color works best when paired with neutrals, so use white or cream linen and walls to your advantage.
Form & Function
When it comes to what furniture you include, go down the route of choosing furniture that not only looks great but serves a purpose too. Considering a simpler room tends to look more modern, it makes sense to go for furniture that’s versatile.
For instance, a simple, box-shaped wooden night stand may seem boring, but when you place a stylish lamp on it, it transforms into a chic bedside stand.
Upgrade Your Linen & Bed Essentials
While materials such as silk, linen, and Egyptian cotton may seem expensive, they pay off in the long run due to their superior longevity and versatility. So if you can afford it, bedding materials like these are worth the investment.
They also have secondary purposes, such as being hypoallergenic; silk pillowcases are brilliant for hair health, with Egyptian cotton being incredibly breathable and comfortable and still very warm when the colder months come around.
Uniform Room Accessories
One subtle thing that makes a huge difference to how a room looks is having different room “accessories.” Such as having door and cabinet knobs that don’t match, one black curtain rail and one white one, or whatever it may be.
These types of things are easily replaceable, you can do the job yourself, and you can also find lots of matching knobs, handles, curtain rails, etc, for very affordable prices on the secondhand market.
Update Your Flooring
Flooring is another essential factor when it comes to creating a more modern space. Use carpets and rugs for a quick fix, or try your hand at upgrading your floors yourself. Wooden flooring is always in vogue – check out the range of options at Flooring Hub for some inspiration.
Carpets can easily set the tone of a room with something like a woven carpet giving a boho and beachy vibe, while a Persian carpet will give you an eclectic and luxurious feel.
Upgrade Your Lighting Fixtures
Never underestimate the power of great lighting, and also don’t underestimate the power of smart lighting choices. Bright, white lighting will make you feel like you’re in a hospital waiting room, while low, warm lighting will make you feel you’re in a more tranquil space.
If you can, try installing wall sconces such as ones with hidden cords, which will have an immediate impact on the space.
Affordable Tech
Finally, nothing says modern like a few gadgets and pieces of tech. And there’s no need to break the bank to get a few of the best ones. A humidifier, for example, can cost anywhere from $20 to $200, depending on where you look.
Other pieces of tech, such as a Google Dot or Amazon Alexa, are also very affordable nowadays, with websites like Amazon providing multiple, inexpensive, remote-controlled light kits.
As you can see, when the urge strikes and you want to modernize your bedroom, there are a plethora of affordable options and ways to do it. And you don’t need to spend a lot of money buying new either as many of these clever upgrades are available in great condition secondhand to help you create the modern bedroom of your dreams.
