What is the Boho Chic Living Room Look?

Usually larger than a family room, your living room is also known as a front room, lounge, sitting room, or drawing room. Boho Chic is one of the most popular interior decorating styles you can use for your living space. It’s characterised by its cosy and eclectic vibe, which is perfect for stamping your own particular style on your home. Boho decor is about incorporating many different things from different philosophies, parts of the world, and ways of life. A complete contrast to the Minimalist ethic, the modern Boho living room glories in the “more is more” ethos.

How Do I Decorate My Living Room Boho Style?

The good news is you don’t need a huge budget. There are lots of ways to get the Boho Chic look in your living room. Second hand outlets or Etsy* are perfect for tracking down pieces of vintage furniture, accessories, and other ideas for colours, layers, and textures that will be unique to you.

Pick a Colour Palette

Starting with the basics, your canvas. White walls are a great backdrop for colour but painting the walls (or just one feature wall) in your favourite colour will add some life to the space. If you’re not sure how it might look, there are plenty of interior design apps that can help you visualise things. Typical Boho colour palettes often feature earthy shades with neutrals, or warm colours combined with cool colours. Think yellows, browns, whites, greens, blues, greys, and reds to start with.

Natural Elements

Much like the hygge home look, adding some natural elements to your living room will make it feel more like home. Use natural materials like wood and stone to create a warm atmosphere in your living space. If your budget allows, a new wooden floor with some Herringbone flooring would look wonderful. Or why not scour the second hand markets, eBay, Gumtree, or Preloved for Boho chic living room furniture such as a wooden coffee table* or TV table? We’ve found some absolute treasures for our home this way.

Plants and Nature

No Boho Chic living room is complete without lots of greenery and, as a keen gardener, I believe you can never have too many indoor plants or flowers either. A palm tree or hanging fern would be perfect on a small table near a window, or on the floor near the fireplace. Bonus points if you go for allergy-friendly houseplants too, and display them in some suitably arty macramé plant hangers* or planters.

Textures and Patterns

Using curtains of different textures and patterns as an accent in one corner of the room is a popular way to add interest to an otherwise plain space. Add texture with patterned floor pillows, throws*, or rugs* for comfort. And don’t be afraid to mix contrasting patterns and bright colours together either, this is your space, so your rules. Popular Boho Chic living room decor includes macramé and faux leather, rattan furniture – especially a swing chair* for that authentic 70s vibe – a green, burnt orange, or yellow sofa*, a brown leather sofa and leather pouffe* (easy to clean), all dressed with some luxurious throws and Moroccan style patterned rugs.

Accessories for the Final Touch

Once you’ve got your cushions*, rugs, throws, and furniture sorted, it’s time to make a personal statement with some carefully chosen accessories. Boho chic living room wall decor includes art prints* and canvases, mirrors*, crafted wall art and wall hangings*. And lighting is key to any space, whether you go for wall lighting, freestanding lights*, or the ever-popular swing and string lights*. It’s really up to you how little or how much you personalise your living room.

How to get the Boho Chic Look in your Living Room

It’s easy to see why the Boho Chic look is such a popular interior design style for the home, and the living room in particular. To recap, the key design elements for cosy and chilled out living space that reflects your personality are:

  • Choosing a colour palette
  • Including natural elements
  • Going for plenty of greenery
  • Mixing up your textures and patterns
  • Adding some accessories

And if you’re still seeking inspiration, you can always look on Pinterest for a plethora of gorgeous interior design ideas too – happy Boho Chic decorating in the meantime!

Such great tips! Our home at the moment isn’t particularly boho, but I absolutely LOVE the style! And I think you’re so right int hat it doesn’t have to be mega expensive. I’ve gotten really into charity shop shopping recently and I’ve seen loads of boho type interior accessories I love. We’ll be redecorating our bedroom next year I think, I’d absolutely love a boho / relaxed style theme to it.
