AD | We invest not just in our homes and cars, but also our financial portfolios and retirement funds, and even our families on a regular basis. However, many of us forget to make time to invest in ourselves, and our futures, don’t we? This can be a real mistake because if you want to achieve the best results in your profession, then you need to be willing to invest in your career. And constantly work towards your goals with a dedicated plan of action.
How To Invest In Your Career This Year
Although it might seem challenging at first, the steps you take now can improve everything from how satisfied you feel at work, to how confident you are in your ability to earn your ideal income. This isn’t only about investing in your skills, it’s also about your personal and professional development. Here are three of the best ways to invest in your career and your future today.
Work on Your Education
This is perhaps the easiest and most obvious way to open new doors on your career path. No matter which direction you want to go in your professional life, the chances are you’ll need to develop specific skills and knowledge to achieve your goals. Sometimes, you can find these via an online course, or a webinar, to push you in the right direction. There are plenty of online courses to choose from – from ITIL v4 certification to project management.
However, if you’re planning on taking on a leadership role in your industry at some point, it might be time to start thinking about earning more serious credentials. You can apply for scholarships online to help you pay for the cost of college, so you can go study in your chosen field.
Choosing an apprenticeship, acquiring a degree, or gaining a similar qualification can unlock so many new employment opportunities, while simultaneously helping to increase your confidence and self-esteem.
Develop a Personal Brand
Personal branding has grown increasingly important in recent years, as social media and the digital world play more of a significant role in how companies seek out and recruit talent. When an employer is deciding whether to offer you an interview, they’re not just going to look at your CV, but your social presence as well to see what they can find out about you online.
Tip: try looking your name up on Google – you might be quite surprised at what you find. If you don’t think your social accounts show a particularly professional image, consider switching them to private for friends and family only.
If you don’t have already have your work history and accomplishments clearly available on LinkedIn, now’s the time to rectify this. Having a LinkedIn presence will not only help you to stand out to future employers, you’ll be able to follow leaders in your field and comment on their expert tips too.
Build Your Network
Finally, when you’re working on supporting your career advancement goals, who you know can be just as important as what you know in any industry. Rather than only working on your skills and talents, you should also be working on developing connections with people who might be helpful to your career.
Consider joining groups on LinkedIn and commenting on industry forums to get to know new people. Take advantage of any opportunities to attend events where you might be able to meet and learn from others. If in person networking gives you the fear (hello!), there are lots of online networking events and webinars you can participate in from the comfort of your screen.
The more people you connect with, the more experience and opportunities you’re likely to unlock, such as learning how to manage people or understanding how the company works from a different perspective. Don’t be afraid, it’s really not as scary as it sounds, so why not get out there and give it a go 😊
What do you think of these three suggestions for how you can invest in your career? Have you tried any of them? What tips can you share for those looking to build their online presence and knowledge base this year?
