Getting a good night’s sleep with Benenox – review *

2nd July 2019      Lisa      8 Comments

AD – GIFTED | While I don’t often struggle to fall sleep, staying asleep is a different matter entirely.  Waking up at 3.00am and spending the next two to three hours trying not to wake Alan too is a frustratingly common occurrence.  Getting a good night’s sleep is something that many take for granted, but the “honey-heavy dew of slumber” 1 is sadly an elusive state for me.

What is a good night’s sleep?

A Chinese medicine practitioner friend told me that stresses and worries manifest by producing excess heat in the liver, which has to work overtime at night to deal with toxic overload.  Certainly, my mind at 3.00am is a very crowded and busy place.  My favourite poet, Shakespeare, expressed sleeplessness very well:

O sleep! O gentle sleep!
Nature’s soft nurse, how have I frighted thee,
That thou no more wilt weigh my eyelids down
And steep my senses in forgetfulness? 2

Quality night time rest is critical because it’s when our bodies carry out their repairs and restoration.  So any interruptions to this have a knock on effect on our overall wellness.

I’ve tried various bed time rituals to break the cycle.  Cool showers to lower my body temperature, herbal supplements, warm drinks, no electronic devices for an hour before bed.  But nothing seems to actually keep me asleep when my mind is in the hamster wheel.  So when Benenox * got in touch about their #iwenttobedlikethis campaign I was more than willing to give it a shot.

Benenox sleep supplement

Benenox Overnight Recharge is a vegetarian supplement which focuses on helping you achieve a more restful sleep.  It helps reduce awakenings, improve your ability to get back to sleep and, most importantly, enhance your energy levels the next day.  Containing a combination of honey, Sustamine and Vitamin B6, it works with your body to restore and renew your cells and glycogen levels overnight.

It comes in two flavours, blackcurrant or honey and ginger and you can either take 15ml neat or dilute it a warm drink.  Both syrups are delicious, I don’t have a favourite, and the honey flavour comes through beautifully, very reminiscent of childhood remedies actually.

Interestingly, (and what I didn’t know) glycogen is stored in our liver and gets depleted at a rate of 10g per hour, with the brain taking a whopping 65% of this.  And when supplies run low, the liver sends cortisone stress signals to the brain to alert it to wake up until sufficient levels are restored.

Does Benenox work?

I’ve been trialling both syrups on and off for a couple of months now, and I’m actually quite shocked by the results.  On the nights when I didn’t take a neat shot (hardcore, me) before bed, I woke up as usual and lay awake stressing and cogitating for a few hours before the alarm went off.

But… on the nights when I did take Benenox before bedtime, I slept through.  I actually slept through the whole night.  And when my alarm went off, I awoke feeling refreshed and clear headed.  My concentration levels and focus during the following days were so much better, and I just felt happy and rested.

I have to admit I was sceptical about yet another sleep supplement.  But I’m a real convert now and will be replacing both my bottles when they run out.  You might not be able to put a price on beauty sleep, but I think Benenox is a worthwhile investment to start with.  Because we all deserve a good night’s sleep, don’t we?

We are such stuff as dreams are made on;
and our little life is rounded with a sleep. 3

Do you have trouble getting a good night’s sleep?  Have you tried a supplement like this before?  How did you get on?  What are your top tips for staying asleep?

Ooh, this is exactly the kinda thing I need right now, thanks for sharing Lisa! I’m also very familiar with the 3am wake-ups and struggling to get back to sleep again! It can be so frustrating, especially the next day waking up feeling groggy and tired, ugh. This does sound like a brilliant solution, especially as it worked so well and you got a full nights sleep #goals. I’m very much liking the sound of waking up feeling refreshed, clear-headed, happy and rested… it sounds like the dream! Thank you for sharing your thoughts, it does sound like a very worthwhile investment and something I’ll definitely consider – great post!! <3 xxx

It’s sooo frustrating when you wake up and can’t get back to sleep again, isn’t it? And the resulting tiredness and lack of focus the next day is a killer. Honestly, Benenox has been a godsend, it’s made such a difference to my sleep patterns. Highly recommend it! Glad you found this helpful, thank you for your lovely comments 🙂 xxx

I’m pretty good at getting to sleep but, like you, staying asleep can be a nightmare! This sounds like something that would be good for me to try out. I’m glad to hear it’s been working for you, which makes me hopeful I’ll have the same results. 😀 Thanks for sharing Lisa.

It’s so strange, isn’t it? Clearly we all have far too much on our minds! I do hope this works for you as well as it has done for me though, Kim. And honey is a very natural and healing ingredient so hopefully not too unsettling for anyone’s tummy x

🌈 Our beloved hobo has taken his last journey. Yes 🌈 Our beloved hobo has taken his last journey. Yesterday evening we had to say farewell to Ginger at nearly 21 years old.

13 years ago he wandered into our greenhouse and decided ours was his new home. So many memories:

😻 He saw us through Buzz, Lily, and Jester, and the arrivals of Spooky, Loki, and Lyra.
😻 Always the most chilled cat, not interested in fighting any other cats, ours or visitors.
😻 Greediest cat ever, not even willing to share with the resident hedgehogs. He could hear the sound of someone walking into the kitchen from 5 miles away.
😻 An inveterate bin diver – our neighbours got used to seeing their recycling spread across the road after he’d gone searching for food.
😻 Always commandeering the warmest spot in the garden or house.
😻 Putting up with Spooky always seeking him out and snuggling up with him.
😻Somehow generating more heat than a volcano, so we could never tolerate him on our laps for more than 10 minutes, we’d have to move him next to us instead.
😻 Always knowing when any of us needed comfort or company and snuggling up to offer purring support.

RIP, Ginger, thank you for choosing us, we were privileged to have you as part of our family, and you leave the biggest hole in all our hearts. 😿
