12 Ways to Prepare Your Home and Family for a New Dog

From setting up their living space, establishing routines, and fostering positive relationships with everyone at home, here are 12 top tips to making your new dog feel at home as quickly and smoothly as possible.

1. Research the Breed

Before bringing your new dog home, research the specific breed you’re considering adopting. This will help you understand their temperament, size, and unique needs. Knowing your dog’s background is essential for creating a comfortable environment suited to its personality.

2. Create a Designated Living Space

Find an area in your home where your dog can relax and feel safe. Set up a comfortable bed or crate and keep their personal items like toys and feeding bowls* together. Having a designated space will make them feel more at ease in the new surroundings and gives them privacy.

3. Puppy-Proof Your Home

Ensure the living environment is safe for your new pet by puppy-proofing every room. Put away all hazardous materials such as cleaning supplies, wires, or anything else they could chew on or swallow accidentally. Remove any items that may harm them or cause damage to your things.

4. Stock Up On Supplies

Dogs require essential items such as food, collar and leash, cleaning products, and grooming tools. And many dogs love Honest Paws CBD products because they help with stress reduction or other health concerns they might face in a new environment – but do speak to your vet before using them.

5. Establish Ground Rules Among Family Members

Help create consistency for both your family and new pet by discussing responsibilities, including feeding schedules, bathroom breaks, training sessions, walking duties, etc. This will ensure that everyone knows what they have to do when it comes to caring for the family’s new puppy. This is probably one of the most important things to do to get your home and family ready for your new dog

6. Have an ID Tag Prepared

Your pup should have an ID tag attached to their collar containing important information such as your name, phone number, and address. This makes it easy for others to identify them if they’re lost or found by someone else. Alternatively, you could get them microchipped or tagged.

7. Choose a Veterinarian

To ensure your pup stays healthy and happy all their life, you’ll need to select a trustworthy vet who will provide expert advice regarding vaccinations and treatments. Consider purchasing pet insurance, as this will make routine visits, surgeries, and medications more accessible.

8. Plan for Obedience Training

Training is an essential part of raising a well-behaved and happy dog. Research local obedience classes in your area, or consider hiring a professional trainer to establish a positive relationship with your new pet. Don’t think you can get away without training your dog just because they’re small. Similarly to point 5 above, this a key step to get your home and family ready for your new dog.

9. Socialize Your Dog Early

Exposing them to different environments, people, and other animals from the start helps foster confidence and good behavior. Regular visits to dog parks or arranging playdates with other dogs will contribute significantly towards their social growth, and prevent separation anxiety.

10. Prioritize Grooming Routines

Routine grooming keeps your pup clean and reduces shedding while improving their overall appearance. Set up a schedule for regular brushing, bathing, nail trimming, and teeth cleaning, depending on the breed’s specific needs. Take your pup to the groomer when they’re young, so they get used to the process.

11. Teach Children About Doggy Etiquette

If you have children at home, educate them about respecting the dog’s space (e.g., not interrupting them when eating or sleeping). All family members should understand how best to interact with the new pet in ways that promote respect and empathy to avoid incidents.

12. Be Patient During the Adjustment Period

It may take some time for both you and your furry friend to feel comfortable in each other’s company. Give everyone at home enough time to bond by remaining positive and be understanding when any challenges arise. With patience, all your family, including your new dog, will make it through.

How to Get Your Home and Family Ready for Your New Dog  – What Would You Add?

Remember, patience and consistency are key during the getting to know you phase. But by following these guidelines, you’ll be setting the stage for years of joy, companionship, and love with your new dog. What would you add to this list?

You have two cats, I will raise you our three, haha, which is why we probably wouldn’t get a dog for the foreseeable future either!

Bring home a dog, or any pet, is definitely something that needs a lot of thought and preparation. My family have never had a dog but we’ve had several cats, and a lot of these points apply to cats too. Thank you for creating such an in-depth guide!

It is an interesting and enjoyable activity for children to play with dogs. Children, as well as other family members, enjoy playing with such types of pets like, dogs, cats, etc.

🌈 Our beloved hobo has taken his last journey. Yes 🌈 Our beloved hobo has taken his last journey. Yesterday evening we had to say farewell to Ginger at nearly 21 years old.

13 years ago he wandered into our greenhouse and decided ours was his new home. So many memories:

😻 He saw us through Buzz, Lily, and Jester, and the arrivals of Spooky, Loki, and Lyra.
😻 Always the most chilled cat, not interested in fighting any other cats, ours or visitors.
😻 Greediest cat ever, not even willing to share with the resident hedgehogs. He could hear the sound of someone walking into the kitchen from 5 miles away.
😻 An inveterate bin diver – our neighbours got used to seeing their recycling spread across the road after he’d gone searching for food.
😻 Always commandeering the warmest spot in the garden or house.
😻 Putting up with Spooky always seeking him out and snuggling up with him.
😻Somehow generating more heat than a volcano, so we could never tolerate him on our laps for more than 10 minutes, we’d have to move him next to us instead.
😻 Always knowing when any of us needed comfort or company and snuggling up to offer purring support.

RIP, Ginger, thank you for choosing us, we were privileged to have you as part of our family, and you leave the biggest hole in all our hearts. 😿
