Driving Law Changes in September Will Have Major Impacts on British Motorists *

5th September 2023      Lisa      4 Comments

AD | Brace yourselves, UK drivers. There are some changes coming in September that will not only rev up your engines but may also impact your wallet. While this time of year is usually associated with heading back to school and the transition into Autumn, it’s also a period of shifts in driving law changes. From new number plates to adjustments for expats in Spain to Welsh speed restrictions of 20mph, British drivers should prepare themselves for navigating through a maze of modifications. So, buckle up, let’s take a look at what these changes could mean for you.

Key Driving Law Changes – What Do I Need to Know?

New Number Plates – More Than a Fashion Statement

From 1st September you’ll start seeing cars on roads displaying “73” plates. These fresh and appealing numbers aren’t only about looking good though, they serve a purpose by identifying the newest vehicles on the road.

However, there is a downside; your current “23” plates might suddenly seem outdated compared to these ones. And these new license plates can impact the resale value of your vehicle. So, if you were planning on selling your car and buying a new car, you could find your old car has lost some of its appeal and market price.

Attention, Expats Living in Spain!

Viva Espana – up until now you’ve had the privilege of driving with your UK licence without hassle. But thanks to Brexit, time is running out, you now only have until 15th September to switch to a Spanish one.

Why should this matter to you? Well, thanks to the agreement between the UK and Spain exchanging your licence doesn’t require you to take a further driving test. Yes that’s right. No test! So, make sure you seize this opportunity before 15th September because who knows what kind of hoops you’ll have to jump through after that.

The Need for Speed… Or Lack Of It – Wales 20mph Limit

The Welsh government is moving ever more slowly but surely towards more road safety. From 17th September, Wales will be implementing a reduced speed limit of 20mph on certain roads in residential and built-up areas, which are aimed at minimising traffic accidents and creating a pedestrian environment.

For those of us who tend to keep a foot on the accelerator, this adjustment might feel a bit challenging. Nonetheless, studies have consistently demonstrated that slower speeds can significantly decrease the severity of accidents.

If you’ve ever experienced the consequences of speeding and required assistance from a solicitor specialising in these cases, you’ll understand the rationale behind this move.

Public Opposition – The Voice of the People

It’s not surprising that many drivers, including some politicians, are expressing concerns about the new speed limit in Wales. A petition calling for its cancellation has garnered over 21,000 signatures, while red ribbons tied to cars have become symbols of dissatisfaction.

That said, significant changes often face opposition before their true value is recognised. Only time will reveal whether the reduction in speed limits will be considered a success, or if it generates further resentment.

The ULEZ Dilemma – London’s Ongoing Battle against Emissions

Although not taking effect in September, it’s worth mentioning Sadiq Khan’s expansion of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) into Outer London boroughs continues to create waves. The implementation, which began on 29th August 2023, means some drivers in London are now facing a charge of £12.50 per day.

With protests scheduled for later this month, the matter remains unresolved. Some individuals view the ULEZ as a necessary step to help combat air pollution, while others perceive it as an additional and unwelcome financial burden.

Direct Line’s £30 Million Repayment – Impact on You

The car insurer, Direct Line, is providing compensation amounting to £30 million to customers who were overcharged. So, although not directly linked to driving regulations, if you’re a Direct Line customer, this unexpected windfall could prove useful, particularly if you find yourself grappling with the expenses associated with driving law changes. Or if you’re looking for cheaper car insurance.

Last Chance – Prepare or Face Consequences

Failure to meet the deadline for any of these driving law changes could lead to fines or even worse consequences such as losing your driving privileges. As the saying goes, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” This certainly holds true for drivers in the UK this September.

All these numerous new driving regulations and updates go beyond mere compliance, they demonstrate the changing landscape of safety, environmental awareness, and international relations. And while change can be inconvenient, it often leads to progress. So, stay informed, adapt promptly when necessary, and then hopefully your future journeys should run smoothly without any unwelcome fines along the way.

Will you be impacted by any of these new driving law changes? What steps have you taken to ensure compliance with the updated regulations?
