How do you feel about Autumn? Are you excited for falling leaves and misty mornings? And the buzz of Hallowe’en and Bonfire Night? Despite the plethora of inspirational Autumn quotes and sayings on Google and Pinterest, in all honesty, I’ve never been a huge fan. In fact, I even wrote this anti-Autumn post a while ago. But times change and, as a gardener, I’m beginning to realise that Autumn or Fall (depending on where you are in the world) actually is quite a magical time.
30 inspirational Autumn quotes that reveal the magic of Fall
Probably some of the most well-known lines about Fall are those from John Keats, the Romantic poet who penned that famous ode To Autumn. So, it’s fitting that the first few quotes are from some of my favourite poets, whose many beautiful verses I fell in love with while studying English and Drama at university.
Poetry, please
Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, / Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun; / Conspiring with him how to load and bless / With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run – John Keats
Not to be outdone, we have fellow Romantic Poet, William Wordsworth:
Wild is the music of autumnal winds Amongst the faded woods – William Wordsworth
And his Romantic contemporary, Percy Bysshe Shelley:
There is a harmony in Autumn, and a luster in its sky – Percy Bysshe Shelley
Next up, another of my favourites, the brilliant Renaissance metaphysical poet (and more) John Donne:
No spring nor summer beauty hath such grace as I have seen in one autumnal face – John Donne
And then we have James Thomson, who penned his fabulous The Seasons, and had this to say:
Crown’d with the sickle and the wheaten sheaf, While Autumn, nodding o’er the yellow plain, Comes jovial on; – James Thomson
Because no collection of quotes about Autumn would be complete without something from William Shakespeare, whose writings are always relevant even some 400 years later, here are two gems:
The teeming autumn big with rich increase, bearing the wanton burden of the prime like widowed wombs after their lords decease ― William Shakespeare
The earth has music for those who listen – William Shakespeare
Who could resist this wry comment on Autumn from Victorian poet, Robert Browning?
Autumn wins you best by this, its mute Appeal to sympathy for its decay ― Robert Browning
Novel nuances
But it’s not only poetry that yields some beautiful quotes that encapsulate the magic of Fall. There are plenty of wonderful writings on Autumn to love in books too.
And all the lives we ever lived and all the lives to be are full of trees and changing leaves… – Virginia Woolf
It’s the first day of autumn! A time of hot chocolatey mornings, and toasty marshmallow evenings, and, best of all, leaping into leaves! – Winnie the Pooh (OK, A A Milne)
Autumn leaves don’t fall, they fly. They take their time and wander on this their only chance to soar – Delia Owens
A beautiful, bright autumn day, with air like cider and a sky so blue you could drown in it – Diana Gabaldon
Clouds of insects danced and buzzed in the golden autumn light, and the air was full of the piping of the song-birds – Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall – F Scott Fitzgerald
Anyone who thinks fallen leaves are dead has never watched them dancing on a windy day – Shira Tamir
Autumn, the season that teaches us that change can be beautiful – Heather A Stillusfen
Everyone must take time to sit and watch the leaves turn – Elizabeth Lawrence
Autumn… the year’s last, loveliest smile – William Cullen Bryant
The leaves are changing; I feel poetry in the air – Laura Jaworski
Autumn is the mellower season, and what we lose in flowers we more than gain in fruits – Samuel Butler
Winter is an etching, spring a watercolour, summer an oil painting, and autumn a mosaic of them all – Stanley Horowitz
Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower – Albert Camus
The heat of autumn is different from the heat of summer. One ripens apples, the other turns them to cider – Jane Hirshfield
Autumn carries more gold in its pocket than all the other seasons – Jim Bishop
It looked like the world was covered in a cobbler crust of brown sugar and cinnamon – Sarah Addison Allen
Autumn whispered to the wind, “I fall: but always rise again” – Angie Weiland-Crosby
I can smell autumn dancing in the breeze. The sweet chill of pumpkin and crisp sunburnt leaves – Unknown
Autumn glows upon us like a splendid evening; it is the very sunset of the year – Mary Russell Mitford
How beautifully leaves grow old. How full of light and color are their last days – John Burroughs
My favourite Autumn quote
Just because I feel it’s an unwritten law to have a favourite in any collection, here’s the inspirational quote that resonates with me most. Even though it’s anonymous:
Autumn is the season to find contentment at home by paying attention to what we already have – Unknown
This year, Autumn for me is a time of reflection, to remember things I’m grateful for, and never more so than during these strange and not very wonderful times. As the nights draw in, and Alan continues to resist putting the heating on, it feels very appropriate to pay attention to home and family and appreciate what we have. And, of course, because the magical season of Fall is also the herald of what, for many of us, really is the most wonderful time of the year!
Which of these inspirational Autumn quotes is your favourite? Do you have a Fall quote I’ve not shared here? What words or sayings always give you those magical Autumn vibes?

Some lovely quotes here, really sum up the feeling of moving into autumn! The winne the pooh one definitely made me smile!
I have to admit it was hard putting Winnie the Pooh into second place 🙂
I love that final quote to, it is exactly how I feel about Autumn.
Lovely post Lisa. Autumn really is a magical time of year x
Ah, I’m so glad, Claire. That one really struck home for me! x
I think my favorite quote here is,
And all the lives we ever lived and all the lives to be are full of trees and changing leaves…
– Virginia Woolf
😌💕🌻
Thank you for this, Lisa! Happy Autumn. 😊
She did have a way with words, didn’t she? To The Lighthouse was the first VW book I read and it’s still one of my faves. Happy Autumn to you too!
Oooo!! I love finding new quotes! I’m one of those people who have boards specifically for quotes! I tend to collect positive ones so these are perfect!
Daisy xoxo
I’m so pleased to hear that, and to find a fellow quote collector!
What a lovely post. It’s made me look forward to those cosy evenings and the quote about finding contentment at home definitely resonates with me too.
Thank you – it was really hard trying to decide on just 30 quotes actually 🙂
I love “Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower” – I’ve never thought of it like that but it’s so true!
What a lovely list of quotes!
Thank you – and that quote made me stop and think too but it’s so accurate, isn’t it? 🙂
Absolutely loved this post. 💛
Thank you so much 🙂
I loved this post, reading all the qutes reminded me why I love Autumn so much and made me feel all warm inside. Autumn is truly one of the most magical times of the year for me, I love being able to see the actual change in seasons and start to get the jumpers back out again. I just love it. Great post, thanks for sharing!
Ah, you love Autumn more than me then, I’m still learning! But I have to admit, researching these quotes made me realise that there’s much to love about Fall, so thank you!
Thanks for sharing these lovely quotes 🙂

Autumn is my absolute favourite season, too, and these quotes express exactly how I feel about this season, every single year!
Oh yay, that’s so lovely to hear, thank you so much!
Love this post Lisa! As if I didn’t love Autumn enough as it is! I’m extra excited this year – I think after how ridiculous this year has been we should all embrace this next season a little more and try and make the most of it. I never really do – but that’s going to change this year, for sure!xxx
I was thinking about you when I was compiling this, I know how much you adore Autumn! Thank you, Jenny, that’s really good advice: make the most of this season and embrace it even more. Perfect! xxx
Aww.. such a sweet collection of quotes. As autumn is approaching, reading them aloud was refreshing😊
Thank you so much, I’m glad you liked my choices 🙂
What a beautiful post! Autumn/Fall is not my favourite season (I’m more of a Spring/Summer person) but this post reminds me to step back and admire the season for what it brings. My favourite quote is the one by Delia Owens.
Thank you so much – I’m a confirmed Summer girl too but Autumn has snuck up on me this year. And Where The Crawdads Sing is an amazing book 🙂
Spring and Fall are my favorite seasons. I love the beautiful fall foliage – t’s indeed a great reminder that change can be beautiful. That’s why I guess my fave quote is the one from Heather A Stillusfen. My next fave is from Winnie the Pooh. Hot chocolate, marshmallows, leaping into leaves… these words give me that magical autumn vibes!!!
Fritzie | http://www.lifetravelsoul.com
Heather’s quote is gorgeous – but I’m glad you love Winnie the Pooh too, you can’t beat jumping into a huge pile of leaves!
I’m excited that fall is finally here even though we’re still in the pandemic. Love all of these different quotes. Autumn has a whole different kind of beauty – the transitional vibes from the flowers blooming to something more on the orange hues. I like that you connected art with the season. I agree about finding contentment at home. Thanks for sharing these!
Nancy ✨
Yes, you’re right, Autumn has a beauty all of its own – even if it’s taken me a while to appreciate it. And thank you, I loved sourcing all these quotes, it was hard leaving some out though!
This post of Autumnal quotes has really got me in the mood for Autumn! I really love your favourite Autumn quote! x

So many great quotes in this post Lisa! I think my favourite is ‘Autumn carries more gold in its pocket than all the other seasons – Jim Bishop’. It just sums up the colours so well, doesn’t it?
I must admit though I am not a massive fan autumn, I much prefer spring and summer, purely for the lighter mornings and nights, but it is nice to get cosy on an autumn night!
Thanks for sharing!

Thank you, it was quite hard choosing which ones to include and which to leave out! I know what you mean though, I’m a Summer girl through and through too but this year I’ve found that Autumn has kind of snuck up on me 🙂
These are great quotes. Most of them I never heard before. Thank you for sharing!
They are lovely, aren’t they? I’m glad you liked them 🙂

Thank you so much, Amie!
Wow this is so inspiring, autumn is so poetic. Thanks for the
collection. Lovely photos too..
I’d never thought about it before but yes, you’re right, it is a poetic season 🙂
Hi Lisa. Feeling quite chuffed with myself as I know quite a few of these (not all, by any means, but more than I thought I would!). And, despite all of the classics, my favourite is … Winnie the Pooh! Thanks for putting these together.
Yay, that’s great to hear! And Winnie the Pooh is a classic too, I won’t hear any different, haha.
“There is a harmony in Autumn, and a luster in its sky – Percy Bysshe Shelley”
I love that you share poetry and novel quotes that embrace the chilling beauty of autumn! The leaves have not yet changed color yet here, nor it is really fall yet, but I feel the anticipation in the air.
Thank you, Jaya. That’s a lovely way to describe Autumn too – “chilling beauty” 🙂
These are beautiful! This is my favourite time of the year, hands down, and I can’t wait to celebrate it. I’m the girl that keeps her Halloween decorations up year-round and jumps to pull out her sweaters at the first sign of a falling leaf. I keep quotes up on the white board in my office, changing them each week as a fun way to change things up. I’m going to refer back to these for a few fun ideas to celebrate as we move forward.
Oh wow, you are an Autumn girl, haha. TBH Summer is my favourite season but this year Autumn has crept up on me and I’m learning to appreciate it with new eyes – bring on those pumpkins!
All of these quotes are so lovely! It makes me so excited to get fully into autumn and wear all my cosy jumpers and scarves! X
Thank you so much – bring on ALL the cosy vibes! x
These are beautiful! I actually love this time of year so much ✨

Great quotes! Thank you for sharing this! I really like autumn because of the fashion and home decor!
Thank you – and yes, I’m slowing coming around to the idea of Autumn decor now too!
I love autumn for this very reason – it brings out so many fun, insightful and interesting things! The shedding of the leaves brings the shedding of the layers down to the raw reality of life
That’s a wonderful way of putting it, Lisa, thank you so much!
Autumn is such a lovely season — I look forward to it! These quotes have definitely got me ready for the Fall!
I’m starting to love it more now – and these quotes definitely help me too!
Thank you for sharing these beautiful autumn quotes, Lisa. Wishing you and your family a beautiful autumn.
Ah thank you so much, Fadima, and I wish you and yours all the best too 🙂
I love all of the qoutes. My favorite ones about the Fall are
“Autumn is a second spring where every leaf is a flower.” By Camus
And
“I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.” By L. M. Montgomery
I nearly included the Octobers one but I wanted to keep to 30!
I have to be honest, I wasn’t really looking forward to Fall this year, but these quotes kinda got me in the mood! Love the one from Winnie the Pooh! Thanks for sharing!
Oh that’s wonderful to hear, I’m so glad! And yes, Winnie is a classic, I don’t care what anyone else says 🙂
I loved all of these! Their words really brought the season to life. And that Winnie The Pooh one was so sweet. Great post!
Thank you, that’s so lovely to hear – and yay for another Winnie fan!
This must be the most beautiful thing I’ve read in a while <3 Thank you sooo much for putting in all the effort it took to write this post!
Oh my goodness, that’s so kind of you to say so – TBH the hardest part was deciding what to leave out!
Absolutely beautiful quotes in this post. They all bring so much joy to me as I prepare to move into my favourite time of year! I hope you and your family have a fabulous autumn. Xoxo

These were lovely! Autumn is my favorite season so this brought a lot of joy to me haha! Only makes me more excited for the next couple months! Thank you for sharing these 💗
Thank you, that’s really lovely to hear – bring on the falling leaves!
Aww these quotes are beautiful. You’re getting me even more excited for my favourite season. My favourite autumn quote is by a Canadian author:
“I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.”
― L. M. Montgomery, Anne of Green Gables
I so nearly included that one but I wanted to stick to 30 quotes!
I just love autumn! I’m so excited for this season and thease quotes are beautiful. I especially love the ones from Shira Tamir and Delia Owens
Autumn is growing on me, I must confess 🙂 And those quotes are gorgeous, aren’t they?
Love this so much! My fav is definitely… It’s the first day of autumn! A time of hot chocolatey mornings, and toasty marshmallow evenings, and, best of all, leaping into leaves! – Winnie the Pooh (OK, A A Milne) – Totally sums up my autumn!

Antonia || Sweet Passions
Yes, they do, that’s a really good way of looking at them.
I love Autumn, the cooler evening and knitwear makes me feel so cosy. You have some lovely quotes, my favourite has to be Winnie the Pooh (loved all the books when I was a child.) A lovely post x
Winnie the Pooh is ranking very highly, and I’m not surprised! x
Lovely quotes you chose, so cosy and autumnal!
Anika
Thank you so much, it was a hard choice narrowing them down!
I absolutely love these quotes!
I’d say autumn is my favourite season because it’s so cosy and there’s always lots to look forward to! ☺️
Love Lozza x
Yes, you’re right, there is lots to look forward to – Hallowe’en, Bonfire Night, Christmas!!! x
I think Autumn is one of my favourite months and these quotes have really gotten me an autumnal mood! I can’t wait to dig out my cosy jumpers and walk through piles of orange and red crunchy leaves!
Oh, that sounds like such a good idea – bring on those leaves!
I love this post! So much beautiful prose and poetry! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for reading, I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Love your collection of quotes, especially this one
The earth has music for those who listen – William Shakespeare
Shakespeare really is for all time, isn’t he? 🙂
I don’t think I’ve ever really thought about quotes specifically for a season but I love this. For me, it’s Winnie the Pooh all the way because I do love the innocent delight that can come from autumn such as scrunching through a pile of leaves and hearing them crisp underfoot. I loved this, there’s some really great quotes here and it’s giving me that snuggly feeling of evenings drawing in. Thanks!
Lindsey
The inspo for the post came when I was trawling Pinterest for something else and I saw so many lovely quotes I wanted to collate them in one place to share – so glad you enjoyed them!
What a beautiful selection of quotes – I love autumn xx
http://www.dellalovesnutella.co.uk/
I’m glad you enjoyed them 🙂 x
This is absolutely delightful! I’m definitely team autumn, but I think it may be tied into a) how much I hate the heat of summer (summer on the mid-atlantic coast of the States is a swampy nightmare) and b) fall baking and cooking contains by far my favorite flavors. Reading this post has practically turned me into a pumpkin spice latte, I’m so ready for fall I can barely stand it!
Aw, thank you, Carolyn, you did make me laugh! And I hope we see a recipe for a pumpkin spice latte over on your blog very soon 🙂
I love autumn. Thank you for sharing all the beautiful quotes.
You’re welcome, I’m glad you liked them 🙂
Autumn is my favourite season, closely followed by winter so I was really excited when the trees started to slightly change and think it’s quite rude we’re supposedly getting another mini heatwave next week. I loved this one ‘and all the lives we ever lived and all the lives to be are full of trees and changing leaves…’. I’ve never really thought about seasonal quotes before so this was an interesting read x
Sophie
You will never catch me complaining about a mini heatwave at any time of the year but I have to confess these quotes are giving me all the Autumn vibes! Glad you enjoyed them, and the Virgina Woolf quote is one of my faves too X
Fall is my favorite and these quotes are amazing! I especially love the one about hot cholately mornings! So cute.
You can’t go wrong with Winnie the Pooh 🙂
I loved these quotes! Great read to end my night ♥
Thank you, that’s great to hear 🙂
Love these quotes 🍂🍂 There should be an Autumn Quote a day app.
Oh wow, that would be amazing!
Autumn is my favorite season & I love these quotes! My favorite out of these is probably the winnie the pooh one!
Everyone loves Winnie – and this really is a brilliant Autumn quote, one of my faves too 🙂
Lovely thoughts on autumn 🍁🍂🍁🍂 I like the last sentiment the most. Indeed this is a great time to reflect, appreciate what we have and get back to basics xx
Thank you, Jenni, I think it’s the one that resonates with me the most too xx
wow what a lovely read!
full of literary things, how could I not love it! 🙂
I live in New Delhi where seasons don’t actually change so much.. just summer, rains and winters. if you go to other parts of India you’ll have variety. at some parts seasons actually change and its lovely and in some others which are near the sea nothing much happens. 🙂 this post made me recall how less I’ve traveled in my own country 🙂
