May 2017 goals

1st May 2017      Lisa      Leave a Comment

First of May, first of May, my outdoors goals are set today!  April’s goals had a 60% success rate so, while I’m on a roll, here are my targets for May.

Contents

  • 1. Direct sow my annual flowers
  • 2. Direct sow my vegetables
  • 3. Riding
  • 4. CPD – Digital Marketing course
  • 5. Enjoy my new freelancing lifestyle
  • 6. Bonus goal

Direct sow my annual flowers

I had planned to do this over Easter but we went on a mini-break instead.  And then we had that viciously cold snap the week after.  So now I need to crack on with direct sowing my cornflowers, poppies, chamomile, night scented stocks, alyssum (smells like honey), briza maxima, ammi majus (posh cow parsley), bunny’s tail, borage, and mixed meadow flowers.  If I sow the seeds now I should get some flowers by mid-late July.  Being able to pick posies and vasefuls of my own flowers in summer is a pleasure and a privilege I never get tired of.

Direct sow my vegetables

This year I want to grow french beans, carrots, onions and radishes.  Top tip: sow carrot and onion seeds alongside each other to deter carrot fly.  I tried this last year and it really does work! But, much as I love the taste of freshly picked sweetcorn, I won’t be growing them again this year.  The amount of effort and space required for a relatively small yield just doesn’t make it worthwhile for me, sadly.  Maybe next year.

Riding

A carry forward from last month but no excuses now the weather is better.  I just need to dig out my hat, jods and boots again!

CPD – Digital Marketing course

I started this Google online course recently but have only managed to get a derisory 11% through.  I became completely sidetracked by Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and, of course, my blog.  Now I really want to continue my CPD as I think the Google Certificate will be a useful qualification in my new freelance career.  Plus it’s a really interesting course.

May 2017 goals - yoga

Enjoy my new freelancing lifestyle

After working set office hours for so many years, I now need to get my head around the idea that I can work more flexibly.  As long as I complete my work then I can do it when it suits me best.  So, if I want to go to a yoga class on a Wednesday morning, then I can.  I can just work a little longer on Thursday.  This sounds great in theory but I think it’s going to take some getting used to.

Bonus goal

My husband and I finally made it out for dinner last month!  Only to our local pub, it’s true, but it was on a SATURDAY NIGHT!  I’m still so amazed by this towering achievement that I can’t think of a bonus goal for May to top this!

What are your May goals?  What would you like to tick off your list this month?

🌈 Our beloved hobo has taken his last journey. Yes 🌈 Our beloved hobo has taken his last journey. Yesterday evening we had to say farewell to Ginger at nearly 21 years old.

13 years ago he wandered into our greenhouse and decided ours was his new home. So many memories:

😻 He saw us through Buzz, Lily, and Jester, and the arrivals of Spooky, Loki, and Lyra.
😻 Always the most chilled cat, not interested in fighting any other cats, ours or visitors.
😻 Greediest cat ever, not even willing to share with the resident hedgehogs. He could hear the sound of someone walking into the kitchen from 5 miles away.
😻 An inveterate bin diver – our neighbours got used to seeing their recycling spread across the road after he’d gone searching for food.
😻 Always commandeering the warmest spot in the garden or house.
😻 Putting up with Spooky always seeking him out and snuggling up with him.
😻Somehow generating more heat than a volcano, so we could never tolerate him on our laps for more than 10 minutes, we’d have to move him next to us instead.
😻 Always knowing when any of us needed comfort or company and snuggling up to offer purring support.

RIP, Ginger, thank you for choosing us, we were privileged to have you as part of our family, and you leave the biggest hole in all our hearts. 😿

Aka Common Laccaria, Waxy Laccaria, Lackluster Laccaria, Deceiver, apparently they’re edible. But as I’m not a fungi expert, I don’t think I’ll be harvesting them for mushrooms on toast any time soon!

If you don’t have any of these perennials in your outside space, you’re missing a trick.

Happy in pots, baskets, and the ground, ours have survived frost, snow and can’t be beaten for fabulously cheerful pops of colour at this time of year. Highly recommended! 👌

And to prune them hard, taking lots of cuttings for new plants. I do this every year, and my plant loving friends all know what they’ll be getting in due course! 💖
