7 Top Tips to Help You Prepare the Best Picnic

Choose the Perfect Spot

Location is everything when it comes to your picnic. Depending on the vibe you’re after, you could go for a countryside setting, a local park, or even your own garden. Look for spots that offer plenty of shade, soft grass, and maybe even a scenic view. Avoid overly crowded areas where you may struggle to find a peaceful place to lay down your blanket.

If you’re bringing kids, it’s a good idea to pick a spot near playgrounds or open spaces where they can run around safely. For a romantic picnic, consider somewhere a bit more secluded where you can enjoy some quiet time together. Beaches, lakesides, or even woodland areas can add a magical touch to your picnic experience.

Invest in a Comfortable Setup

Comfort is key when spending hours outdoors. A quality picnic blanket is a must-have – choose one that’s large enough for everyone to sit on and preferably waterproof on one side in case the ground is damp. Folding chairs or cushions will add an extra level of comfort, especially if you’re not a fan of sitting on the ground for too long (I’m not).

For added convenience, consider packing a portable picnic table or a couple of sturdy trays to hold your food and drinks. You don’t want your carefully curated spread toppling over thanks to uneven ground.

Plan a Delicious Menu

Food of course, is the heart of any picnic. The best picnic menu is one that’s easy to transport, doesn’t spoil quickly, and doesn’t require complicated utensils. Finger foods like sandwiches, wraps, and quiches are always a hit. Salads can also be a great option, but you need to avoid ingredients that wilt or spoil easily in the heat.

To elevate your picnic experience, why not explore pre-made food options from a gourmet provider like Piglets Pantry? With a Piglets Pantry discount voucher at Latest Deals, you can enjoy an indulgent selection of pies, pastries, and other picnic-perfect treats without breaking the bank. These items save time and effort, allowing you to focus on enjoying the day.

Don’t forget to pack some sweet treats like brownies, fruit tarts, or even ice-cream if you have a cooler bag or coolbox. Fresh fruits such as berries, grapes, or sliced melon also make for a refreshing (and healthy) addition to the picnic spread.

Keep Hydration in Mind

No picnic is complete without drinks. Whether you’re sipping on lemonade, iced tea, or something a little stronger, keeping your beverages cool is essential. Insulated bottles or a cooler bag can help maintain the temperature of your drinks throughout the day.

If you’re planning to bring alcoholic drinks like wine or cider, don’t forget a corkscrew and some sturdy cups. Always check the rules of your chosen location, as some parks and public spaces, including beaches, may have restrictions on alcohol consumption.

Pack Smart

Organisation is essential to make sure you have stress-free picnic. Pack your items in a practical way by using separate containers for each food item to keep everything fresh. Reusable containers, beeswax wraps, or eco-friendly sandwich bags are ideal for cutting down on waste.

Consider investing in a good-quality picnic hamper or cooler bag to keep everything neatly organised. Remember to pack a cutting board, knives, and serving spoons for any larger items. Don’t forget essentials like napkins, wipes, and extra rubbish bags to leave the area clean after your picnic, particularly if you’re not in your own garden.

Think About Entertainment

Aside from eating and chatting, the best picnic often involves some fun activities. If you’re picnicking with kids, bring along a football, frisbee, or bubbles to keep them entertained. For adults, a deck of cards, board games, or a portable speaker for background music can add a fun element to the day – just remember not to play the music too loud, not everyone is going to have the same music tastes as you…

If you’re after something more relaxing, bring along a good book, magazine, or simply soak up the atmosphere with some music or a podcast.

Stay Safe and Be Weather-Ready

Even the best-planned picnic can be spoiled by unpredictable weather. Make sure you check the forecast ahead of time and prepare accordingly. Pack sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses if it’s going to be a sunny day (hopefully), and bring along light jackets or blankets if the weather might turn cooler in the evening.

It’s also smart to have a backup plan. If the skies suddenly turn grey, be ready to move your picnic indoors or to a sheltered area. A gazebo or parasol can be useful in case of unexpected rain or to provide extra shade during particularly hot weather.

Conclusion

Preparing the perfect picnic doesn’t have to be complicated or costly. By choosing the right location, packing a well-organised menu, and bringing along a few comforts, you can create a memorable day for everyone involved. And with the added bonus of using a Piglets Pantry discount voucher at Latest Deals, you can enjoy gourmet treats without the hassle of cooking everything yourself. So, grab your picnic basket, your blankets, anything else you need, and get ready to enjoy the great outdoors – whatever the weather!

I really enjoy picnics but have not done one for quite a long time. As the weather where I live is pretty cold, I will have to wait for spring, but I will be planning one based on the tips you’ve got here. I want to do something in the local botanical garden (ideal setting) that my husband would enjoy. Thanks for this!

Your local botanical garden sounds wonderful, Molly. And yes, I agree about it being a little chilly right now – so much for our Indian summer!

🌈 Our beloved hobo has taken his last journey. Yes 🌈 Our beloved hobo has taken his last journey. Yesterday evening we had to say farewell to Ginger at nearly 21 years old.

13 years ago he wandered into our greenhouse and decided ours was his new home. So many memories:

😻 He saw us through Buzz, Lily, and Jester, and the arrivals of Spooky, Loki, and Lyra.
😻 Always the most chilled cat, not interested in fighting any other cats, ours or visitors.
😻 Greediest cat ever, not even willing to share with the resident hedgehogs. He could hear the sound of someone walking into the kitchen from 5 miles away.
😻 An inveterate bin diver – our neighbours got used to seeing their recycling spread across the road after he’d gone searching for food.
😻 Always commandeering the warmest spot in the garden or house.
😻 Putting up with Spooky always seeking him out and snuggling up with him.
😻Somehow generating more heat than a volcano, so we could never tolerate him on our laps for more than 10 minutes, we’d have to move him next to us instead.
😻 Always knowing when any of us needed comfort or company and snuggling up to offer purring support.

RIP, Ginger, thank you for choosing us, we were privileged to have you as part of our family, and you leave the biggest hole in all our hearts. 😿
