AD | Is the outside of your home starting to look a bit worse for wear?  If so, maybe it’s time to renovate the exterior, because after all, the outside of your home is the first thing people see.  If you’re looking for some inspiration, here are the top 4 easy ways to improve your home’s exterior, transform your outside space and help you achieve your dream home.

How to improve your home’s exterior

It’s all about kerb appeal, isn’t it?  And to make a good first impression, you need to make sure that the outside of your house is looking just as good as the inside. So here’s how to do it.

Upgrade your green space

One of the first things that you notice about a home is the front garden, which if left unkempt can look extremely untidy and unattractive.  Which means it’s time to dig out your gardening tools to help tackle your jungle-like garden.  After this, you can start to add some colour to your garden with flowers and other outdoor decorations.  A wooden bench and a few window boxes, for example, can work wonders and make your property feel really homely.

If you need more inspiration, you can turn to RW Invest, the North West’s leading property investment experts.  They have several developments with beautiful communal gardens that leave a lasting impression.  Some of the apartments have spectacular roof terraces which feature framed garden arches, a great feature to have in any size garden.  We have a few in our garden and they look wonderful with scented roses, clematis and honeysuckle scrambling through them.

Make walkways welcoming

Another easy way to improve your home’s exterior is by creating a walkway that not only looks good but is also very inviting.  So instead of uneven bricks, you could level out your path using gravel and use paving stones either side of the pathway to create a border which leads up to the house.  Then you could plant some fragrant perennial herbs, such as thyme, rosemary, or lavender, which give off a lovely fragrance when brushed against.  An added bonus is that they need very little watering too.

Enhancing your pathway is not only a great way to improve the look of your home but also essential for safety.  Especially if you have children or older family members, as an uneven path can lead to unnecessary injuries.

Enhance entrances

One of the most important features of your home’s exterior is your front door, so it’s important to make sure it looks aesthetically pleasing.  This may involve applying a quick lick of paint to make your door look brand new again, or you may need to replace it.  But that doesn’t mean you need to buy a brand new door.  Instead, you could purchase a vintage-style door and simply restore anything that needs updating.

If you want to enhance your entrance, you could spruce up your current porch by changing up the colour.  Try going with a different colour to your front door but make sure it fits well.  For example, if you choose a traditional colour like green, you could paint your porch white and add wooden fixtures.  Don’t forget a few plants too, a strategically placed pot or two and even a fragrant climber will all add to the inviting feel.  And if you’ve got grass at the front and struggle to keep on top of it, you could even consider artificial grass too.

Highlight your home

Outdoor lighting is the perfect finishing touch for any home exterior to highlight various features.  To showcase your front door, you could use lanterns and other hanging lights either side of your doorway. This not only looks attractive, it’s also a great security feature, which would perfectly complement a home alarm system such as one of these from Verisure Smart Alarms.

When choosing outdoor lighting, you need to decide whether you want to use electricity or solar power, with the latter being the more environmentally friendly option.  However, electric lights are much more reliable, especially if security is the main priority.  We have a mix of both, and sitting outside at dusk becomes quite a magical experience with our mix of dragonfly tree lights and flower bed solar spikes.

So there we are, 4 easy ways to improve your home’s exterior and give it some of that all-important kerb appeal.  Have you tried any of them?  What are your top tips for sprucing up your outside space?

These are some great ideas Lisa. You made me rethink about a single family home instead of apartments. A combination of electricity and solar power lights is a great idea. I could imagine a beautiful garden with colorful flowers and a nice clean pathway. I really wish I lived in such a home. 🙂 I always fancy your garden my dear. Beautiful photos.

Thank you so much, Via. We lived in a first floor flat for 15 years, although I did try and keep the front door maintained and the front pathway tidy. I couldn’t put any pots out though because they kept getting stolen ): I’m much happier being in a house with its own garden now! xx

🌈 Our beloved hobo has taken his last journey. Yes 🌈 Our beloved hobo has taken his last journey. Yesterday evening we had to say farewell to Ginger at nearly 21 years old.

13 years ago he wandered into our greenhouse and decided ours was his new home. So many memories:

😻 He saw us through Buzz, Lily, and Jester, and the arrivals of Spooky, Loki, and Lyra.
😻 Always the most chilled cat, not interested in fighting any other cats, ours or visitors.
😻 Greediest cat ever, not even willing to share with the resident hedgehogs. He could hear the sound of someone walking into the kitchen from 5 miles away.
😻 An inveterate bin diver – our neighbours got used to seeing their recycling spread across the road after he’d gone searching for food.
😻 Always commandeering the warmest spot in the garden or house.
😻 Putting up with Spooky always seeking him out and snuggling up with him.
😻Somehow generating more heat than a volcano, so we could never tolerate him on our laps for more than 10 minutes, we’d have to move him next to us instead.
😻 Always knowing when any of us needed comfort or company and snuggling up to offer purring support.

RIP, Ginger, thank you for choosing us, we were privileged to have you as part of our family, and you leave the biggest hole in all our hearts. 😿
