AD – GIFTED | Alan and I don’t tend to make a huge deal over Valentine’s Day. But as an opportunity for cake is never going to pass us (ok, me) by, the chance to get a delicious and bespoke bakerdays * one was a no brainer. And to be able to choose my own very personalised message was quite literally the icing on top (dreadful pun very much intended). So, what did we get and what did we think?
bakerdays letterbox cakes
When you choose bakerdays, you can create a customised cake (and balloons) for any occasion. There are plenty of design, size, and flavour options, including gluten, wheat free and dairy free, and you can even personalise your cake with photos. If you order by 2pm, your cake should arrive the next day, in a package that’s small enough to fit through most letterboxes. A bonus if you know you can’t be in to take delivery.
Valentine’s Day letterbox cake
I’ve worked with bakerdays before, for Alan’s birthday, so I was confident about the yumminess of the cake. After browsing all the flavours on the website, I went for rich chocolate chip again. And I was delighted to see the perfect illustration and message that I could personalise. You also have the option to change the font, style, and colour (although I didn’t) before selecting a delivery date.
As we have a tiny letterbox, DPD left the cake in our designated safe place. They poked a card through to say where it was, so there were no issues at all with delivery.
Your cake arrives in a protective tin, inside a cardboard box. The cake also has plastic spongy bits inside both the tin and the box to stop it sliding around and getting squashed. (This is an improvement on last time, when it slid to one side in transit, although obviously this didn’t affect the taste).
Design and taste
Alan and I have a saying, “I love you to the moon and back again,” so it was lovely to be able to personalise our cake in this way.
The cake was in absolutely perfect condition. bakerdays put a paper tab underneath their cakes so you can pull the tab to lift everything out on one piece. No need to try and slide a knife underneath, nor tip your tin upside down. It’s a little touch, but a thoughtful one.
I always hate the moment I have to cut into a design, it seems like such a shame to spoil it. But, you know, quality testing is an important part of any review 🙂 Although this is a Valentine’s Day cake, there was no way we were getting away with not letting Flora have some too. Anyway, as before, the chocolate sponge was light and moist and the chocolate cream was just sweet enough. I’m not a fan of fondant icing so I gave mine to Flora again, who said it was just as delicious as the first time.
Valentine’s Day bakerdays letterbox cake – worth it?
My expectations were high and I’m delighted to say bakerdays didn’t disappoint. I still think the concept of letterbox cakes is amazing. There really is no celebratory occasion that they wouldn’t be suitable for: birthdays, graduation, new job, passing a driving test, the list is endless. If however, cakes aren’t quite your thing, why not try a Valentine’s grazing board instead?. We absolutely loved our early celebration Valentine’s Day cake, so a big thank you to bakerdays for the chance to work together again.
Have you ever tried a letterbox cake before? What celebration would you order one for?

Yay for cake!! And yay for intentional puns, I love it, ha ha! Aww, this is honestly the cutest cake Lisa, it’s awesome how unique and personalized you can make it, I’m always impressed by bakerdays 🙂 Chocolate chip sounds like a delicious choice, I think I would have opted for that flavour too, especially as it has chocolate cream in it! Yum! It looks like so much care and attention to detail has gone into making it perfect, and I still think the concept of a surprise birthday cake coming through your letterbox is a genius idea. That’s gotta be the best kind of mail ever, right? Thank you for sharing your lovely review and gorgeous photos! <3 xxx
PS. I'm now REALLY craving chocolate cake!!
Ah, thank you Bexa, I thought you’d appreciate a pun, even a howler! This was seriously the yummiest cake, so rich and so moist but not at all sickly. And Alan loved the design too, haha, a couple of old fogeys in space 🙂 Thank you for your lovely comment, and I completely agree, cake through the mail is the best kind of mail! xx
This cake looks adorable!! This is a great idea for Valentine’s day. And one should never pass an opportunity for cake 😉
Indeed not, that would be unpardonable, haha! 🙂
This cake is so cute and so perfect for Valentine’s Day! I have tried Bakerdays and love the concept! I had chosen a lemon victoria sponge back then! so delicious!
I was so tempted by lemon sponge but memories of our previous chocolate one won out – maybe next time! 🙂 x
Awh the design you picked is so cute! I’ve never been disappointed with a bakerdays cake – they’re so yummy! The one I was sent for Valentine’s Day, I chose the lemon flavour for the first time and honestly, I think it was my favourite yet! I could eat those entire cakes by myself!

Oooh, I was so tempted by lemon but you know, CHOCOLATE, haha. Fingers crossed, if I work with bakerdays in the future, I’ll choose lemon next time 🙂 xx
This is such a great idea for a gift for Valentine’s Day! Cake is always a good idea but it being able to be delivered to your front door is even better. The design of the cake is really cute, almost too cute to eat! Great post x
It is, isn’t it? They are such gorgeous cakes, perfect for any occasion. And I agree about the design, although greed did get the better of us, haha! x
Ooh these cakes look so yummy. I love cake though I’m going off chocolate cake and I don’t know why. The design on the icing is really lovely and the tin looks pretty too. Great review Lisa – I might need to try one of these! x
Thank you, Joy! If you’re going off chocolate (???!!!) then you ought to try the lemon drizzle one, I hear that it’s absolutely delicious too 🙂 xx
Oh, that was such a cute cake. I’m glad that you enjoyed it.
Jennifer
We really did, thank you 🙂
Yesss I absolutely LOVE bakerdays letter box cakes!! I’ve tried the gluten and dairy free and the chocolate chip ones and they were both soo yummy. I was so incredibly surprised at how moist and incredibly tasty the gluten and dairy free one was, it was some of the best sponge I’ve ever tasted! This cake really is adorable and something my boyfriend and I say to each other, too 🙂 So glad you enjoyed the cake and I hope you have a lovely valentines whatever you’re doing!
Alice Xx
Yes, for a smaller cake you wouldn’t think the sponge would be so delicious but they are yummy. Aw, I’m glad Alan and I aren’t alone with this saying, haha. And thank you, hope you have a lovely Valentines too! xx
I think that Bakerdays cakes are just the cutest idea. I’ve worked with them before and got a vanilla but I’m drooling over the look of that chocolate. I don’t like fondant icing either so usually leave that but it definitely does leave the cake super moist! Happy Valentines!

Ah, I’m not so keen on vanilla, I’d prefer the lemon if I didn’t get outvoted for chocolate every time, haha. But thank you, Soph, and Happy Valentines to you too! x
This is such a lovely idea. I would love to gift someone something like that. Absolutely adorable!
I’m not sure if bakerdays do international delivery but yes, it’s the perfect gift for sending by mail 🙂
You know me, Lisa, I love cake! 🙂 I loved working with bakerdays for our anniversary in October, the cake was so soft and delicious. Like you, I love the fact the fit through the letterbox, yet still maintain perfect condition. I absolutely LOVE the design you chose, it’s so cute! I’m glad you all enjoyed doing the taste test, too. 😉
Ah, thank you, Ruth! These cakes are just amazing aren’t they? So delicious and so clever as well. Perfect for any occasion 🙂 xx

Thank you 🙂 and yes, there’s never a good reason NOT to eat cake! x
Aww the cake design looks lovely! I’m always amazed when I see that these cakes make it in one piece without sliding around everywhere or getting smashed in transit. Choc chip sounds delicious. I wish they made vegan ones! x

I know, I am too, haha, it’s a genuine feat of engineering. Aw, they do dairy and gluten free so maybe they’ll start making vegan ones soon, that would be great! x
I quite like bakerdays cakes, but I often wonder what the fondant icing could be replaced with… (But then again, I do quite like it!) Happy Valentines Day Lisa x
Thank you, Lydia, same to you! xx
Cake is always a good shout whether that’s for Valentine’s Day or just because and Bakerdays are perfect. We bought a couple of Christmas Star Wars ones last year.
There’s never an occasion when a cake isn’t appropriate, is there? Star Wars sounds perfect!
Letterbox cakes, now that’s taking the biscuit.
Still you have me reaching for one.
Excellent, that’s very good to hear!
