Why is Protecting Your Wooden Garden Furniture So Important?

Wooden garden furniture is susceptible to a variety of environmental stressors, and without proper care, it can deteriorate quickly. While trees do just fine in the wild, your beautifully crafted wooden furniture will not.

Protection extends its life, durability, reduces the need for costly repairs or replacements, and keeps it safe from our unpredictable British weather. It’s not only a matter of practicality, it’s also making sure your outdoor space always looks its inviting best.

What Damages Wooden Garden Furniture?

Weather and Environmental Damage

The most significant adversary of wooden garden furniture is the weather. Rain can lead to wood rot, damp conditions encourage mould and mildew growth, and intense sunlight can cause fading and weakening of the wood fibres. Even temperature fluctuations can cause wood to expand and contract, leading to cracks and structural weaknesses.

Biological Factors

Termites, woodworms, and other wood-eating pests can be a nightmare for garden furniture owners. These bugs burrow into the wood, compromising its integrity from the inside out. Fungi also pose a risk by breaking down the wood cell structure, which can lead to decay.

Regular Use

Obviously you want to use your wooden garden furniture, that’s why you bought it. But regular use can also contribute to wear and tear. Scratches from everyday use, stains from spilled drinks or food, and damage from pets can all impact the lifespan of your outdoor furniture (as we know from personal experience). Without adequate protection, these minor damages can accumulate, leading to a less than desirable appearance and eventual failure of your furniture.

Top Solutions for Protecting Wooden Garden Furniture

Sealants

Applying a wood sealant is one of the most effective methods to shield your garden furniture from the elements. Sealants provide a barrier that repels water, resists UV rays, and prevents the wood from drying out and cracking. There are various types of sealants available, including water-based and oil-based options, each with their own set of benefits.

Oils and Preservatives

Oiling your wooden garden furniture not only enhances its natural beauty but also offers protection. Oils penetrate deep into the wood, preserving its strength and flexibility. They also make the surface more resistant to water and humidity. Preservatives, on the other hand, help prevent fungal growth and wood-eating insects, ensuring that your furniture remains structurally sound.

Protective Covers

Sometimes, the simplest solutions are the most effective. Unlike trees, your furniture has no bark to shield it, so using protective covers when it’s not in use will protect it from weather damage, pollen, and debris. We’ve found waterproof covers are especially useful during the off-season months when our furniture is exposed to harsher conditions such as rain, snow, and frost.

How to Apply Protection to Your Wooden Garden Furniture

Prepare The Surface

Before applying any protective treatment, it’s essential to prepare the surface of your furniture. This means cleaning it thoroughly to remove dirt, grime, and any existing mould or mildew. Sanding the wood will create a smooth surface for the protective product to adhere to, ensuring an even application and better absorption.

Choose The Right Product

Selecting the right product for your furniture is vital. Consider the type of wood, the climate you live in, and the level of protection you require. Read instructions and labels carefully, and go for products specifically designed for outdoor garden furniture. If you’re unsure, seek advice from a professional or a knowledgeable retailer.

Application Process

Applying protection to your garden furniture should be done with care. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions precisely. Usually, this involves applying thin, even coats of the product with a brush or cloth, allowing for adequate drying time between coats. Pay special attention to the joints and ends of the wood, as these areas are particularly vulnerable to damage.

Other Tips for Maintaining The Life of Your Wooden Outdoor Furniture

Regular Maintenance

This goes a long way towards preserving the condition of your wooden garden furniture. Inspect your furniture periodically for signs of wear or damage. Tighten any loose screws or bolts, and repair minor issues before they become major problems.

Proper Storage

During the winter months, or extended periods when you won’t be using your furniture, consider storing it in a shed, garage, or under a waterproof cover. Keeping your furniture dry and away from direct exposure to the elements will significantly extend its lifespan.

Immediate Treatment of Damage

If you notice any damage, such as cracks, warping, or signs of pest infestation, deal with it straightaway. The quicker you treat the problem, the less chance it has to escalate. Sometimes a simple sanding and re-application of protective treatment can save a piece of furniture from irreversible damage.

Wrapping Up

Your wooden garden furniture is more than simply a functional part of your outdoor space, it’s an investment in your home’s comfort and aesthetic appeal. And the keys to durability and longevity are consistent care and maintenance. By understanding the best ways of protecting your wooden garden furniture, and taking care of it as outlined above, you can ensure it remains in excellent condition and a source of joy and relaxation for many years to come.

I really appreciated your tips about the application process. It really does take time and patience to apply oils and sealants correctly. I just recently had to add sealant to my fiberglass front door. It looked so good when done, but I had to work on it for 5 days!
