What Is a Photo Canvas? A Beginner’s Guide to Your Personal Wall Art *

4th July 2025      Lisa      6 Comments

AD | There’s something very special about giving your favourite moments a place on your wall. Whether it’s a family photo, a sunset, or your child’s first drawing, turning a digital image into a physical piece of art makes it timeless. But what exactly is a photo canvas, and why has it become one of the most loved ways to display personal photos? Let’s break it down.

What is a Photo Canvas?

A photo canvas, or canvas print, is simply a digital photo printed directly onto durable canvas fabric, then stretched over a wooden frame to create a ready-to-hang piece of wall art. Unlike traditional framed photos behind glass, canvas prints have a soft, textured surface that adds warmth and depth to your space.

The most commonly used materials are cotton or polyester blends, and the frame is often made of lightweight wood. The result? A gallery-style look that feels elegant but personal, and is surprisingly easy to hang.

Why Choose a Photo Canvas?

They’re timeless as they work with every interior style, from modern and minimalist to boho and rustic. These prints are often used to showcase meaningful moments: family portraits, travel memories, wedding photos, or even pet pictures. You can choose the size, orientation, image layout, and even how the edges are wrapped: mirrored, coloured, or stretched.

No glass means no glare and no heavy lifting. So, they’re safe for children’s rooms and can hang with simple wall hooks or adhesive strips. Also, a photo canvas is an affordable upgrade with a high-end décor look, especially when ordered from a trusted company like MYPICTURE.

Common Sizes for a Photo Canvas

Choosing the right size obviously very much depends on where you want to place your photo canvas. Here’s a quick guide:

Small (20x20cm, 30x20cm) – Great for gallery walls or gifts

Medium (40x30cm, 60×40cm) – Ideal for bedrooms, hallways, or home offices

Large (80×60cm, 100×75cm) – Perfect as a focal point above a sofa or bed

Panoramic formats – Excellent for landscapes or wide shots in living rooms or dining spaces

How To Make Your Photo Canvas

The process is super simple:

  1. Go to MY-PICTURE.co.uk
  2. Upload your photo to the website, choose the size, the edge design, and the frame (optional).
  3. The image is printed using solvent-free, UV-resistant inks onto the canvas.
  4. Next, it’s stretched over a wooden frame and secured at the back for a clean, polished finish.
  5. And then it’s just waiting for your order to arrive and it’s ready to be displayed.

How Long Will My Photo Canvas Last?

When cared for properly, a high-quality canvas print can last for a long time. That makes them not only decorative but also an archival way to preserve life’s best moments for generations. To keep your print looking its best:

  • Avoid direct sunlight or high-humidity areas (like bathrooms).
  • Dust gently with a dry microfibre cloth.
  • Don’t use cleaners or rough sponges.

Where Should I Hang My Photo Canvas?

Canvas prints can go just about anywhere, but here are a few ideas:

  • Living Room: Create a centrepiece above the fireplace or couch with a large landscape or family portrait.
  • Bedroom: Display calming photos or romantic memories above the bed.
  • Home Office: Choose motivational quotes, serene scenes, or loved ones for inspiration.
  • Hallway / Entryway: A gallery wall with small-to-medium canvases makes a beautiful first impression.
  • Nursery / Children’s Room: Sweet baby photos or playful artwork printed on canvas add warmth without the risk of glass frames.

Picture Perfect

Photo canvases offer more than just decoration. They tell your story, bring joy to blank spaces, and offer a sense of grounding through the visuals that matter most to you. Whether you’re creating a cosy gallery wall or gifting a printed memory to a loved one, a photo canvas offers a timeless, affordable, and deeply personal piece of art. And one to be treasured for many years to come.

What image would you choose to frame? And where would you place your ideal photo canvas?

🌈 Our beloved hobo has taken his last journey. Yes 🌈 Our beloved hobo has taken his last journey. Yesterday evening we had to say farewell to Ginger at nearly 21 years old.

13 years ago he wandered into our greenhouse and decided ours was his new home. So many memories:

😻 He saw us through Buzz, Lily, and Jester, and the arrivals of Spooky, Loki, and Lyra.
😻 Always the most chilled cat, not interested in fighting any other cats, ours or visitors.
😻 Greediest cat ever, not even willing to share with the resident hedgehogs. He could hear the sound of someone walking into the kitchen from 5 miles away.
😻 An inveterate bin diver – our neighbours got used to seeing their recycling spread across the road after he’d gone searching for food.
😻 Always commandeering the warmest spot in the garden or house.
😻 Putting up with Spooky always seeking him out and snuggling up with him.
😻Somehow generating more heat than a volcano, so we could never tolerate him on our laps for more than 10 minutes, we’d have to move him next to us instead.
😻 Always knowing when any of us needed comfort or company and snuggling up to offer purring support.

RIP, Ginger, thank you for choosing us, we were privileged to have you as part of our family, and you leave the biggest hole in all our hearts. 😿
