AD | When you think of Scandinavian design style, it’s all about a minimalist aesthetic with timeless pieces of furniture and multifunctional items. However, Scandi chic doesn’t have to mean spartan, and especially not in the bedroom. So, if you’re looking for ways to turn your sleeping space into a cosy retreat, then you’ll love these hygge bedroom ideas. But firstly…

What is Hygge and How Do You Pronounce It?
The hygge meaning, according to the Cambridge Dictionary is “a Danish word for a quality of cosiness (ie, feeling warm, comfortable, and safe)”. And Visit Denmark claims “hygge means creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with good people.” Fun fact: hygge didn’t originate in Denmark at all, but in Old Norwegian, where it meant something like “well-being.” It first appeared in Danish writing around the end of the 18th century, and the Danes have appropriated it as their own ever since. Oh, and it’s not pronounced “higg” but “hyoo-guh”, OK?
Hygge Bedroom Ideas
Mixing textures, fabrics and colours is an integral part of hygge home decor. But remember, less is more and you’ll probably want to keep it soft and simple in your bedroom. Here are some suggestions for hygge bedroom furniture, hygge home accessories and cosy bedroom ideas to help you give your sanctuary all the comfy vibes.
Wood Accents
Are a big feature in hygge homes. If you can, installing some wood flooring would really give you the classic Scandinavian bedroom feel.
Soft Furnishings
Pile on all the luxurious cashmere throws and cushions for maximum snuggle factor. And don’t forget a soft rug or two for your wooden floor. There’s nothing better than feeling your feet sink into cosy warmth first thing in the morning.
Bring the Outside In
Connecting with nature, also known as friluftsliv, is another Norwegian concept. Green plants such as peace lilies, or a few cacti, or ferns, are great ways of bringing the outside in. And they’ll help to filter the air too, so you’ll enjoy a better quality of sleep.
Soft Mood Lighting
Choosing LED lights that can mimic natural light and keep our bodies tuned to our sleep cycles will also result in better sleep. And if you go for a smart LED bulb then you can also opt for a colour changing lamp. So you can change the lighting from Cool White in the morning to a more relaxing Very Warm White before retiring to bed.
Neutral Calming Colours
If you’re having trouble picturing your ideal hygge bedroom, why not try an interior design app to help you? And of course there’s always the Pinterest rabbit hole to fall down in search of other hygge bedroom ideas…
A Few Personal Items
Because adding some special photos, or favourite scented candles, or displaying some treasured jewellery, are wonderful ways to personalise your hygge bedroom designs. Not too many items though, which leads me on to…
Declutter and Tidy Up
Because less mess definitely equals less stress. Stick to the less is more Marie Kondo mantra and you can’t go too far wrong. And think about how you can efficiently store your belongings – what about a wooden chest that also doubles up as a seat? Or a mirrored wardrobe with the elegance of a bespoke sliding door, seamlessly combining functionality with a touch of personalised style, as the perfect solution to streamline your living space and enhance its aesthetic appeal Top tip, always make your bed. You’ll feel better knowing that not only have you ticked off the first task of the day, but it’s ready and waiting for you when you get home too.
Have a Hygge Home All Year Round
The beauty of hygge is that although it’s super appealing as we head into Winter, it works just as well in Spring, Summer and Autumn too. If you start with a neutral base, you can simply ring the changes with a few seasonally inspired candles, cushions, rugs or plants. Tip: if you’re stumped for where to buy hygge decor, try looking on Etsy* for some fabulously individual pieces to add style to your home. Because as the Danes will tell you, a good thing about Scandinavian hygge design is that you can apply it anywhere. So, do you think a hygge lifestyle is one for you too?
I hope these hygge bedroom ideas have been helpful. Do you already have any hygge decor in your home? What are your favourite home accessories or styling tips for creating a cosy bedroom?

Just reading about these wonderful ideas for creating a hygge bedroom is making me feel more peaceful and calm. I learned just a little about hygge when my husband & I visited Copenhagen a couple of years ago. The concept is one I would like to put into greater practice as I declutter and make my living space more of a nest. Spending most of my time at home due to the pandemic, so I want it to be a little more enjoyable! Thanks for these lovely ideas!
That’s wonderful to hear, Kathy, thank you so much. I’m trying to put some of these tips into action too, but my daughter and husband are both magpies so the declutter bit is very challenging! Good luck with your nest.
Such a nice post! I love interior design, especially when it is hygge related. Wood accent makes such a different in any room. I like incorporating neutral.

Amazing ideas! I have always been inspired by Scandinavian home designs and always wanted to create a similar minimal and cozy bedroom feel for myself. This will surely be very helpful, thanks a lot! 🙂
You’re very welcome, I’m so pleased they’ve been helpful!
I love the hygge design when it comes to interiors – especially bedrooms. I think it’s the layering of textures with clean design that I love so much, it’s so cosy! 🙂

It is so cosy, not all clean and bare, you’re absolutely right!
I find dark, moody tones very relaxing and comforting so my hygge bedroom features dark bedding, a lot of candles, and lush textures. The beauty of hygge is that it means something different to everyone, so it’s possible for anyone to find their own hygge style!
That’s lovely and yes, absolutely, hygge means different things to all of us, that’s what’s so good about it 🙂
I agree with you! Having wooden floors in the bedroom does make a difference, more than I imagined. Also plants are very important and so it tidying up often.
One thing I forgot to include in the post was that wooden floors are easy to clean too!
These are some great suggestions. I’ll be honest, I’ve seen the term ‘hygge’ coming up a lot on blogs but wasn’t sure exactly what it meant. For that reason, I’m happy that you took the time to break it down lol I am now even more intrigued by articles like this because it seems to really fit with the lifestyle that makes me feel most content. Cozy blankets and bringing nature indoors where possible – that definitely sounds like the perfect retreat!
Funnily enough I did think of you when I was writing this, Britt. Camping but it’s very nature (no pun intended) is all about getting outside but you can easily have a hygge tent, I’m sure 🙂
I am a big fan of soft throws and a cosy place to curl up and relax! I love the way different colors, textures, and fabrics all come together to create a great room or corner, but a little personalization goes a long way for me.
I like to keep things like my tarot cards and crystals on my dresser. Books and notebooks go everywhere else.
The colder weather also always inspires me to clean and tidy up!
Thanks for sharing this!
I love the sound of your personal items, Jaya, they are such a part of you. And yes, the colder weather is a great time to be hygging up our homes!
Wow totally agree, indeed looks so cozy. Love the calming colours and
plants inside..
It’s such a lovely cosy vibe 🙂
I love hygge! My bedroom decor favorites are soft throws, mountains of pillows, a cosy arm chair to read in… I also like to display my jewelry nicely 🙂 Have a really lovely December xx
Aw, I’m so envious of your bedroom, Jenni, it sound like such a gorgeous space. And the same to you too xxx
I’ve never heard of this concept but I LOVE it and your ideas of how to create it! Thanks for sharing!
You’re welcome, glad it was helpful!
You have shared some great ideas here. Decluttering and keeping the place tidy is utmost important I feel. We prefer using Warm white lights in our home during winters to have that cosy feel. Interesting Post.
Thank you so much, that’s very kind of you.
So that’s how you pronounce hygge! I’ve heard about hygge before and it honestly sounds great. I like the idea of bringing the outdoors in, seeing plants in the house always make me happy but I never really considered putting them in the bedroom. I hope to redo our bedroom at some point and I will have to apply this knowledge when that does happen.
I know, it’s really strange, isn’t it? Plants in the bedroom are great for filtering the air though, so I hope you can get some into yours at some point 🙂
I think I could actually adapt a hygge bedroom design. I have the wooden floors and furniture that goes with it plus some plants! Just need to declutter!

Oh, that sounds great, good luck with the decluttering!
I’ve recently moved to a new home that I’ve been able to decorate, and I’ve definitely embraced principles of hygge! I think that, especially at the moment, we all need a comfortable and cosy environment to call our own.
Ah, lucky you, that sounds wonderful – congrats on your new home!
These are good tips to transform our homes into paradise. I really need to do spring cleaning before new year. Hehehe. Thank you for sharing.
You’re welcome, Fadima, happy spring cleaning!
Since living in Denmark, I have grown to love the Scandinavian design style. Right now I live in a small apartment so it does feel a bit crowded, but I have a pile of blankets and pillows on my bed & couch, succulents (plus a cactus) on every windowsill, and there are wood floors in every room except the kitchen.
Wow, you sound like you’ve nailed the hygge look – your apartment sounds super cosy and snuggly!
This was really interesting. I’m so glad someone has finally said how you pronounce Hygge because I have struggled with how to say it for ages.
Thank you, Kelly, and yes, I know, me too!
Thanks for sharing, I have been trying to get my bedroom cosy for ages, great tips 🙂
You’re welcome, glad they were helpful!
These are such great ideas! We’ve been on a mission this year to make our space feel Hygge, and there’s plenty in this list which we still need to try. Big shout out for house plants – we’ve loved introducing these into our home recently 🙂 Thanks for sharing!
Thank you – and yes, house plants are key, although I must say my indoor plant game is not strong! 🙂
I love this deep dive into hygge, Lisa, and all the elements look fabulous together. I love a cozy bedroom and while there’s a couple of things I’d still like to tweak, I am pretty happy with mine – perhaps just a plant or two might do the trick! Thanks so much for sharing.
Thank you so much, Katerina, I’m glad you enjoyed it – and yes, do try a few plants, they’re great in the bedroom 🙂
Been falling in love with the Danish culture and I think their philosophy about hygge is just truly amazing. As you mention in this post “less is more” and I agree. The more space and “earthy vibe” we have in our home the much happier we are.
Michelle
Yes, exactly – so glad you’re a hygge fan as well 🙂
