AD | Gym wear has been very much in the news recently, hasn’t it? Remember that mannequin that didn’t confirm to someone’s perceived ideal healthy figure? Cue a social media storm. But why shouldn’t we feel comfortable, supported, and stylish when we exercise, whatever shape we’re in? Finding the perfect gym outfit has the power to motivate us, whether we go to a gym or prefer to exercise in the comfort of our own home. Either way, I need any and all the encouragement to get me moving. So wearing something that’s not only fit for purpose but flattering as well sounds like gym wear goals to me.
What makes the perfect gym outfit?
Have you ever made the wrong move and ended up exposing more than you wanted to? No-one wants to experience that in a public gym. So finding the perfect gym outfit is something that you need to get right from the start. From properly supportive underwear to comfortable and stylish outerwear, all designed to help you give your best while exercising.
Sports bra
Regardless of what type of exercise you practice, a sports bra is a must as it offers greater support to your boobs than a standard bra. And as someone who learned this the hard way on a treadmill, I can confirm it’s a necessary investment 😉
Gym pants
The ideal gym pants should follow all your movements perfectly, without leaving you uncovered or flashing flesh you’d rather keep hidden. Stretching or bending in yoga or pilates also requires a flexible gym outfit that moves with you. And additional lumbar support is definitely a bonus, so these high waist gym pants by Freddy * are ideal.
Freddy was set up in 1976 by Carlo Freddi who created professional footwear for dancers and gymnasts. The Italian brand has since evolved into a complete apparel collection, specialising in pants for every occasion to enhance your body and curves. Freddy pants are made with a special WR.UP technology, a patented material made from 90% cotton and 10% elastane. Their ethos is all about the Art of Movement and being an Italian brand, as you would expect, style is also at the heart of their designs. Including strategically positioned seams to shape, smooth and lift your body, as well as support it.
Quality first
When you’re choosing your ideal gym outfit, quality is key. Don’t just be tempted by bright colours or special patterns. Bear in mind that cheaper garments are very unlikely to have the same quality as more expensive ones. If you’re going to be spending money on a gym subscription, it makes sense not to scrimp on your gym wear, doesn’t it? The right fit and fabric will not only look good, they’ll last longer as they’re designed to cope with rigours of exercise (think stretching and sweating) too.
Other accessories
So now you’ve nailed your perfect gym outfit, don’t forget about some other helpful accessories too. A bottle of fresh water is a must (ideally not single use because, you know, the environment) to stay hydrated. A few healthy snacks to keep your energy levels up are always welcome. And a soft, absorbent towel on your shoulders to mop your brow is also a good idea. Now all you need to do is choose your gym and get started on those workouts!
What do you like to wear at the gym? Do you have a favourite style of outfit that works for you?

Gym wear is definitely the type of clothing I wear most regularly – I often just wear my yoga leggings around the house, even when I have no intentions of doing any exercise, they are just sooo comfy 🙂 I especially agree, quality clothes are well worth the investment. I’ve never heard of Freddy before, but just had a look and the leggings seem affordable and they have a nice range too. It’s hard to find gym clothes which are both good quality and reasonably priced so will be adding this one to my faves! Thanks for the recommendation Lisa, great post! <3 xx
I looooooove wearing gym wear around the house (because let’s face it, I don’t do the gym, haha) but these pants look so stylish. I love the detailing, it’s so unusual to find that on leggings, and the fact that they’re proper gym kit too is a bonus if I ever do take up a subscription – thank you for your lovely comment, Bexa! xxx
These look so stylish! And added bonus that they’re proper gym wear too. I usually wearing leggings, a scrappy top and (of course) a sports bra suited to the activity I’m doing. Great post Lisa.
Don’t they just? I never knew gym wear could be so stylish, they look so cool! Thank you, Kim 🙂
