AD | You’ve probably heard the saying ‘you are what you eat’, haven’t you? Because by making the right food choices, we can ensure our brains are getting the nutrients they need to stay healthy and functioning optimally. Without getting too scientific though, how exactly can a healthy diet boost physical and mental wellbeing, and keep you feeling strong and healthy as the years go by?
How Does a Healthy Diet Boost Physical and Mental Wellbeing?
Whether you’re looking to lose weight, improve your overall physical health, or boost your mental wellbeing, maintaining a healthy diet can go a long way in helping you to reach your goals and stay happy and healthy.
Sticking to a balanced, nutrient-rich diet (and combining this with plenty of regular exercise) can help you to avoid diet-related illnesses. And stave off the ill effects of existing dietary conditions, whether they be autoimmune disorders, stomach issues, or more serious ailments. By focusing on a healthy diet, you’ll be less vulnerable to medical misdiagnosis and hospital negligence claims when seeking medical treatment for a preventable diet-related illness.
The Link Between Diet and Mental Health
While the link between diet and mental health is complex and multi-faceted, there’s no doubt that the food and drink you choose to consume can have a marked effect on the way you feel and the way your brain functions. Professor of Nutritional Psychiatry, Felice Jacka OAM, has even stated that “a healthy diet is protective and an unhealthy diet is a risk factor for depression and anxiety.”
But why is your diet such an important deciding factor for your mental health, mood, and wellbeing? Essentially, diet affects mood and performance in humans – for example, eating regularly prevents your blood sugar levels from dropping, which can make you feel tired and bad-tempered. Whereas staying well hydrated can positively affect your mood, energy and concentration levels.
Promoting good gut health by following a diet that’s rich in healthy fats, amino acids, vitamins and minerals means you can directly lower stress levels and improve your mood. This will enable you to sleep more soundly at night and feel better each day, especially if sticking to a well-regulated diet regime and eating at regular intervals.
How Does Food Impact Physical Health?
In humans, food works to provide energy and give the body the essential materials (or information) it needs for optimal physical performance. Put simply, the food you eat powers your body, and the quality and makeup of your diet can directly affect your physical health.
By eating too much (or even too little) and by following an irregular or unhealthy diet, you have a higher chance of becoming overweight and undernourished. You’ll also be more at risk of picking up diseases, illnesses and health conditions that can be either caused or amplified by a poor diet, such as heart disease, diabetes and arthritis.
What Foods Are Best For a Healthy Diet to Boost Physical and Mental Wellbeing?
While there’s nothing wrong with treating yourself every once in a while, it’s a good idea to avoid fatty junk food and carb-laden comfort food binges wherever you can.
If you want to improve your physical health, consider devising a diet plan that contains varied foods which are rich in vitamins and minerals, and which contain a minimal amount of calories. It’s also important to try and consume fresh, organic food rather than heavily processed foods, or produce that’s been grown with the help of unnatural pesticides.
When you’re creating a new balanced diet plan with physical health in mind, you’ll need to factor in things like quantity (you may have to weigh out portions of food), meal timings, and what exactly your motivation is for eating certain foods. CBT techniques can be helpful here, as part of your overall health regime.
Don’t be afraid to indulge yourself with the odd sugary snack or protein-based meal after a heavy workout though. Enjoying the occasional reward as part of your overall plan should not negatively impact your overall diet or health. Everything in moderation is a good mantra to follow because let’s face it, a little square of good quality chocolate nearly always feels like treat 😊

Oh absolutely, and I agree about the timing. I could definitely use a better planned diet (and some exercise!)
It’s hard to eat healthy sometimes, but worth it! Thanks for the reminder!
