5 Common Roof Problems Homeowners Should Watch Out For *

14th April 2023      Lisa      Leave a Comment

AD | It can be easy to take our home’s roof for granted, even though it’s arguably one of the most crucial architectural features of our houses. However, there are some common roof problems that you should watch out for as they can cause significant damage if left unresolved. All roofs will benefit from regular inspections, to enable you to spot the warning signs of potentially costly issues, and help keep your roof in tip-top condition.

What Are The Most Common Roof Problems for Homeowners?

Homeowners often face a range of roof issues that can cause major damage and expensive repair costs. From high winds to poor maintenance, some of the most common roof problems include leaks, moss or algae, blocked guttering, cracked tiles, and weather damage. By learning more about these potential issues and taking proactive steps towards prevention, whether you live in your home or it’s a second home you rent out, you can dramatically reduce your risk of costly repairs due to roof damage.

Leaks

Leaks are a common roofing issue that can cause serious problems if they aren’t addressed. Often, they’re linked to a fixture that penetrates the roof and could lead to some structural weakness – for example, chimneys, roof vents, badly fitted lead flashings (an issue we had in our home a few years ago) or dormer windows.

If you suspect your roof is leaking, the first thing you should do is head up to the loft and take a look around. Keep your eyes peeled for signs of damp and black mould (also caused by lack of ventilation too). If you find these red flags, then you’ve probably also found your leak.

Moss Or Algae

Many British homes experience the growth of algae and moss. While you may think this slowly creeping growth is harmless, it can actually cause serious problems over time. Because algae and moss both trap moisture, this dampness can cause damage to your roof that will require repairing.

If you do find that your roof has been damaged, then it’s a good idea to call in professional roofers to address the issue as soon as possible. Not sure where to find reputable roofers near you? Just post your job details on MyBuilder, and local roofers will soon get in touch with you to find out more about your situation and provide a quote for their roofing services.

Blocked Guttering

Gutters serve an important function, helping to direct rainwater away from the house and onto the ground below to prevent water damage and other related problems. However, over time, gutters can become clogged up with all manner of debris – from fallen leaves and twigs, to bird feathers, nesting materials, and other forms of detritus. We actually had some plants growing in our gutters when we moved in ☹

Eventually, they can become so blocked that they can no longer perform their task effectively, and then your roof will be more likely to fall prey to leaks and other types of damage. That’s why it’s so important that your gutters are cleaned out on a regular basis. It can save you significant sums of money in the long run.

Cracked or Missing Tiles

This can be a major issue for homeowners as it can cause serious damage to their home’s roof if left unchecked. Tiles are the first line of defence against water and other elements that could potentially cause damage.

When they become cracked or, even worse, are missing, replacing them isn’t only essential for protecting your home. It also promotes energy-efficiency, as well as aesthetic appeal, and prevents more costly damage and repairs down the road.

Structural Problems

A particularly severe fault in your roof can be caused by structural damage. There are a number of possible factors behind this problem, ranging from fallen trees, to weathering, to old age, or even poor installation when the house was first roofed.

If you suspect structural damage of any kind, it’s vital that you seek professional assistance as soon as possible, as this kind of problem can result in serious damage to your home, compromising your building insurance and, more importantly, your home’s integrity.

Buildings can fall victim to various kinds of roofing issues, some more serious than others. Whatever common roof problems you end up encountering, it’s important to address them as soon as you can. This will prevent further damage and ensure you can continue to enjoy the security of having a strong and sturdy roof over your head for many years to come.

🌈 Our beloved hobo has taken his last journey. Yes 🌈 Our beloved hobo has taken his last journey. Yesterday evening we had to say farewell to Ginger at nearly 21 years old.

13 years ago he wandered into our greenhouse and decided ours was his new home. So many memories:

😻 He saw us through Buzz, Lily, and Jester, and the arrivals of Spooky, Loki, and Lyra.
😻 Always the most chilled cat, not interested in fighting any other cats, ours or visitors.
😻 Greediest cat ever, not even willing to share with the resident hedgehogs. He could hear the sound of someone walking into the kitchen from 5 miles away.
😻 An inveterate bin diver – our neighbours got used to seeing their recycling spread across the road after he’d gone searching for food.
😻 Always commandeering the warmest spot in the garden or house.
😻 Putting up with Spooky always seeking him out and snuggling up with him.
😻Somehow generating more heat than a volcano, so we could never tolerate him on our laps for more than 10 minutes, we’d have to move him next to us instead.
😻 Always knowing when any of us needed comfort or company and snuggling up to offer purring support.

RIP, Ginger, thank you for choosing us, we were privileged to have you as part of our family, and you leave the biggest hole in all our hearts. 😿
