When is the Best Time to Replace Roof Windows? Fakro Experts Advise *

19th December 2024      Lisa      2 Comments

AD | Choosing even the highest quality roof windows unfortunately still means you’ll need to replace them over time, especially if you want to maintain efficient ventilation and suitable protection from the cold. It’s only natural that, after many years of opening and closing, their mechanisms will eventually wear out. And when should you replace roof windows? Fakro’s experts have some suggestions to help you decide whether the windows in your house can serve you successfully for a few more years, or whether it’s time to look around for new windows.

Why Should You Replace Roof Windows?

Manufacturers generally recommend roof windows be replaced every 20 years, especially if they’re of good quality, such as centre pivot models. However, this shouldn’t be taken as a set timescale, and much depends on the intensity of use, the window’s exposure to weather conditions, or any other random reasons out of your control. You may need to replace the window because of a defect that can’t be repaired, a defect you didn’t notice on installation, possibly due to an incorrect installation by inexperienced technicians, or one that appeared after some time.

Sometimes, you may need to look at a roof window replacement during a roof renovation or loft rearrangement. For example, when a previously unused attic suddenly becomes your bedroom or entertainment space. Because you might need more daylight, which means you need to replace a window or install additional joinery.

And windows that have been in use for several years usually no longer meet current thermal insulation standards. So, if you want your home to be energy-efficient, you may need to replace them as old windows won’t guarantee proper air-tightness, safety, and ventilation.

It’s worth considering having your roof window serviced once a year and you should check its condition regularly. This will help prevent huge heat loss during colder weather or even frost on the inside of the window, which can lead to serious problems. Discover more tips over on Fakro’s website.

Replacing Roof Windows is an Investment

As mentioned, replacing the roof windows often becomes necessary if you want your home to be energy efficient, particularly as most heat escapes through the windows, leading to increased costs. Yes, your windows can save you a lot of money but only if their seals are airtight. This will not only minimise the bills but also ensure a comfortable environment for your household.

Well-chosen and correctly installed roof windows also offer other benefits such as effective noise dampening, efficient ventilation, and helping to prevent the loft overheating in summer.

How Long Does it Take to Replace Roof Windows?

The short answer is it depends! There are a number of factors that influence how long a window replacement takes. Such as, the size of the openings – if the new windows match the dimensions of the old ones and the roof structure is in good condition, the work will be quicker. However, your thermal insulation also needs to be up to current regulations and, unfortunately, if you haven’t replaced the window in the last 10-15 years, there’s a high probability that will have to be replaced as well.

The actual replacing of the windows is the quickest part, far more time is taken up by any work that needs doing before installation. Like throwing out the old window frames, preparing the openings and the trim recesses and the thermal insulation around them.

When is the Best Time to Replace Roof Windows?

Firstly, the time of year makes a difference. Spring and summer are undoubtedly the best times for this type of work. Although, if you’ve noticed any cold coming from the attic, then even winter will be a better time to replace pitched roof windows rather than to leave them as they are.

Secondly, replacing your pitched roof windows will be less costly if you do it at the same time as a general loft conversion or roof renovation. That way, the combined works are likely to be cheaper than if you do them separately.

Have you ever had to replace roof windows? Did you do it as a one-off or as part of a loft conversion? Do you have any more tips to share?

This is such an informative post. I don’t own a house with roof windows, but I like the idea of having them installed in a home for the flood of light and ventilation they give to spaces in the home. The Sunroof window is also a great feature of a house. Your blog post has opened my eyes to care and the possible replacement of a roof window. Thank you for sharing.

🌈 Our beloved hobo has taken his last journey. Yes 🌈 Our beloved hobo has taken his last journey. Yesterday evening we had to say farewell to Ginger at nearly 21 years old.

13 years ago he wandered into our greenhouse and decided ours was his new home. So many memories:

😻 He saw us through Buzz, Lily, and Jester, and the arrivals of Spooky, Loki, and Lyra.
😻 Always the most chilled cat, not interested in fighting any other cats, ours or visitors.
😻 Greediest cat ever, not even willing to share with the resident hedgehogs. He could hear the sound of someone walking into the kitchen from 5 miles away.
😻 An inveterate bin diver – our neighbours got used to seeing their recycling spread across the road after he’d gone searching for food.
😻 Always commandeering the warmest spot in the garden or house.
😻 Putting up with Spooky always seeking him out and snuggling up with him.
😻Somehow generating more heat than a volcano, so we could never tolerate him on our laps for more than 10 minutes, we’d have to move him next to us instead.
😻 Always knowing when any of us needed comfort or company and snuggling up to offer purring support.

RIP, Ginger, thank you for choosing us, we were privileged to have you as part of our family, and you leave the biggest hole in all our hearts. 😿
