AD | When the sunny season rolls around, we all start feeling the itch to declutter and get organised. Bulky sweaters, extra bedding, and all that cold-weather stuff needs packing away to free up space for a breezy, minimalist summer vibe. If you’re short on closet real estate, an ottoman bed might just be the storage superhero you’ve been searching for. Let’s take a look at what makes these lift-up beds so brilliant for getting that space-saving functionality with zero style sacrificed.
The Ottoman Bed Breakdown
Unlike a standard bed frame with empty space underneath, an ottoman bed has a roomy storage compartment built right in, thanks to its unique hydraulic setup. The mattress base lifts up on gas struts to reveal a hollow interior where you can stash all your extras.

With the simple lift of the mattress, that cavernous under-bed storage area becomes completely accessible. No more blindly shoving things under the bed and then wrestling to retrieve them later. You can easily see everything at a glance and keep it all neatly organised.
Different Strokes for Different Folks
Ottoman beds come in a few different opening configurations to suit your preference and room setup.
The most common style features the entire mattress base lifting as one solid platform at the end – ideal for bedrooms with a middle-of-the-room bed placement, and anyone wanting maximum storage access and space to play around with.
An alternative configuration is a side-opening ottoman – perfect for vaulted ceilings and attic conversions with angled ceilings.

And then there are half-ottomans, where only one-half of the mattress base is a lift-up storage compartment while the other half stays put. Half opening ottomans are great if you have a bedside table in the way or a minimal storage need

How Cavernous Are We Talking?
When manufacturers describe the storage depth of an ottoman bed, they’re referring to the amount of clearance space between the slats and the floor. This determines just how much you can pack away in that under-bed cavern.
The typical depth ranges from 10 to 16 inches, with 10-12 inches being standard for most models. A generous 16-inch depth gives you enough vertical room to stash those big, bulky items like a cooling mattress topper, extra pillows, and puffy winter duvets.
Wooden or Wrapped in Fabric?
Like any other bed frame, ottomans come in wooden and upholstered varieties, so you can easily coordinate with your room’s aesthetic.
Classic wooden ottomans have a timeless simplicity and work equally well with both modern and traditional bedroom decor. Many have a panelled design or elegant curved headboard for a touch of sophistication.

Upholstered options bring an extra hit of texture with their plush, fabric-wrapped bases and headboards. Silky velvet is an ultra-luxe choice for a boutique hotel look, while sleek grey linen keeps things crisp and contemporary.
Some models even combine the best of both worlds, pairing a wooden exterior frame with an upholstered headboard for the ultimate in fashion-meets-function.
Clutter Contained
Unless you’re truly a minimalist, we all tend to accumulate “stuff” that needs a home when not in use. Having a dedicated space to corral that clutter – be it bedding or seasonal clothes – makes it easier to keep your bedroom feeling like a calming oasis.
An ottoman bed kills two birds with one stone, giving you essential storage plus a comfy place to recharge every night — all in one space-saving piece. With that genius combo, achieving a serene, streamlined sleep sanctuary for summer has just got so much easier.
