Halls or Home Away from Home? What’s Best for Today’s Students? *

16th April 2024      Lisa      4 Comments

AD | The transition from sixth form or college to university is a pivotal phase in a student’s life, fraught with choices. And one of the most significant decisions is choosing where to live. Whether you opt for traditional dormitory living in halls or home away from home in off-campus housing, each offer unique experiences. This article, written with the help of TK Property Group, a property investment specialist, delves into the pros and cons of both options, to help you or any students you know, facing this choice.

Halls of Residence: The Quintessential Student Experience

Dormitory living, often the first choice for first-year students, is synonymous with the traditional university experience. Halls aren’t just buildings, they’re vibrant communities where lifelong friendships can start to blossom. They offer a structured environment, often appealing to those leaving home for the first time. When I was a fresher, this was my choice for my first year.

Pros of Living in Halls

  • Community and Social Networking: Dorms are bustling with activities, fostering a sense of community. They provide a brilliant opportunity to meet all kinds of people from diverse backgrounds, potentially leading to lasting friendships and valuable networking. I met one of my dearest friends in halls during our first term at college.
  • Convenience: Located on or near campus, dorms offer unparalleled access to university facilities such as libraries, classrooms, and dining halls. This isn’t only super convenient, it also enhances student engagement and participation in campus life.
  • Support Systems: Dorms have a built-in support system, including advisors and other staff, who are on hand to help students deal with both academic and personal challenges.

Cons of Living in Halls

  • Privacy and Space Limitations: Dorm rooms are notoriously small and sometimes shared with room mates, limiting personal space and privacy (although this wasn’t my experience).
  • Rules and Regulations: Living in dorms may come with rules and curfews, which might be restrictive for some students seeking more freedom.

Home Away from Home: The Allure of Off-Campus Housing

Off-campus housing, from apartments like the luxury X1 Landmark in Manchester to shared houses, appeals to students desiring more independence. This is the option I went for in my second year as it was less tied to the institutional rhythm of university life, and offered me a taste of real-world living (including having to budget!).

Pros of Living Off-Campus

  • Independence and Personal Growth: Living off-campus means dealing with real-life responsibilities such as paying bills, cooking, and cleaning, which can significantly contribute to personal development.
  • Customised Living Spaces: Off-campus housing offers more room for personalisation. Students can choose their room mates and location, and often have more space than in a dorm.
  • Life Skills: The experience of managing a household, budgeting for rent and utilities, and interacting with a broader community can provide invaluable life lessons.

Cons of Living Off-Campus

  • Isolation from Campus Community: Students living off-campus might find it challenging to stay connected with the campus community and may miss out on spontaneous get-togethers and events.
  • Additional Responsibilities: The freedom of off-campus living comes with added responsibilities, including commuting to campus, which can be time-consuming and costly.

Halls or Home Away from Home – Making the Choice and Factors to Consider

When deciding between dorms and off-campus housing, students should consider several factors:

  • Budget: Off-campus living might seem cheaper at first glance, but it’s essential to factor in all costs, including utilities, transportation, and groceries, some of which might be included in dormitory fees.
  • Lifestyle Preferences: Students who value privacy and independence might lean towards off-campus housing, while those seeking a communal university experience may prefer dorms.
  • Academic Focus: The convenience of living on campus, with easy access to libraries, study groups, and faculty, can make it easier to focus on your studies.

The choice between dormitory living and off-campus housing is obviously a personal one, and also contingent upon individual preferences, lifestyle, and academic goals. While dorms offer a supportive, community-focused experience, off-campus housing provides a taste of independence and real-world living.

For many, starting in the dorms and transitioning to off-campus housing in later years offers a balanced approach. It’s what I did, along with many of the friends I made during my first year. This way you can immerse yourself in campus life before gradually becoming more independent. Ultimately, the decision should align with what best supports your academic journey and personal growth.

Whether choosing the halls of residence or a home away from home, the most critical factor is finding a living situation that offer you an engaging, and productive university experience. So, do take some time to weigh your options carefully, considering not only the initial comforts but also how your choice could influence your time at university and beyond.

If you went to university, did you go for the halls or home away from home option? Which did you prefer and why? And what, if anything, would you do differently if you had your time again?

When I went to university, I stayed living at home as circumstances made this the best option at the time. It’s definitely good to weigh up the choices and what will work best, and it’s worth spending time to do this carefully as it’s such a big part of the university experience. Great info!

Thank you Molly! Yes, I suspect if I’d gone to uni locally, that might have been my option as well.

I am at university now. As a mature student I’ve decided not to stay in college and rent privately while I am at university and, thus, spending as much time as I can at home. But, if I was in my late teens or early 20s, I would have made another choice.

That’s interesting, Anca. I think I would probably do the same as a mature student. Now I feel my family is more important than student socialising, which held greater appeal when I was younger. 🙂

🌈 Our beloved hobo has taken his last journey. Yes 🌈 Our beloved hobo has taken his last journey. Yesterday evening we had to say farewell to Ginger at nearly 21 years old.

13 years ago he wandered into our greenhouse and decided ours was his new home. So many memories:

😻 He saw us through Buzz, Lily, and Jester, and the arrivals of Spooky, Loki, and Lyra.
😻 Always the most chilled cat, not interested in fighting any other cats, ours or visitors.
😻 Greediest cat ever, not even willing to share with the resident hedgehogs. He could hear the sound of someone walking into the kitchen from 5 miles away.
😻 An inveterate bin diver – our neighbours got used to seeing their recycling spread across the road after he’d gone searching for food.
😻 Always commandeering the warmest spot in the garden or house.
😻 Putting up with Spooky always seeking him out and snuggling up with him.
😻Somehow generating more heat than a volcano, so we could never tolerate him on our laps for more than 10 minutes, we’d have to move him next to us instead.
😻 Always knowing when any of us needed comfort or company and snuggling up to offer purring support.

RIP, Ginger, thank you for choosing us, we were privileged to have you as part of our family, and you leave the biggest hole in all our hearts. 😿
