7 Brilliant Hair Hacks For Busy Mums *

2nd August 2023      Lisa      6 Comments

AD | For most mums, the constant struggle of trying to find time for ourselves while juggling a packed schedule is all too familiar. While we may not have the same amount of time to do our hair and makeup as when we were younger, finding brilliant and time saving hair hacks for busy mums is easy, thanks to the power of the Internet. Here are 7 quick and stylish hairstyles that are ideal for any day of the week – whether you’re a mum or not.

Effective Hair Hacks for Busy Mums

The best hair hacks rely on accessories, and one of the best hair styling accessories is the Dyson Airwrap that allows you to achieve silky smooth and voluminous waves in an instant, or the latest trend of heatless curls. But there are plenty of other ways to love your locks too.

Master Three Easy Hairstyles

As tempting as it can be to simply tie your hair back, it’s worth taking a little extra time on your crowning glory instead. While you don’t need something new every single day of the week, learning at least three easy go-to hairstyles gives you variety and options for those days you want something more.

A quick topknot, effortless braids, and a low, messy chignon are really easy to master. Social media channels such as YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram are filled with countless tutorials, teaching you endless amounts of styles, skills, and hair hacks for busy mums.

Overnight Curls

This is the viral new hair hack that’s dominating trends on social media. Overnight curls are a simple and heatless way to achieve your favourite bouncy beach waves with minimal effort by wrapping your hair around socks or headbands and leaving it to set while you sleep.

To achieve this look, start by parting your hair down the middle and applying a styling spray, gel or foam to minimise any potential frizz and extend the lifespan of your curls. Begin wrapping one section around the fabric, slowly adding more hair until it’s all been wrapped around the material, similar to a French braid.

Secure the ends with scrunchies and leave for a minimum of 7-8 hours. Once removed, finish with a hair serum to break up the curls and smooth away unwanted frizz.

Wash Hair at Night

You may value your ‘golden hour’ of relaxation once the kids are in bed, but switching to a night time hair washing routine has other benefits. Such as allowing you to take an uninterrupted shower for as long as you like, which is a self-care gift in itself for many mums.

After shampooing and deep conditioning your hair, applying a hydrating oil allows your hair to reap all the benefits of your chosen products while you sleep. Once you wake up, your hair will be dry and ready for styling.

Embrace Natural Texture

It won’t just be mums who’ll be happy to hear that bedhead is in. Now more than ever, embracing your natural texture is very on trend, simplifying your morning routine, and giving your hair a much-needed break.

For those of us with wavy or curly hair, allow your natural texture to air dry, applying a small amount of hair oil or serum* to minimise potential frizz. Then you can either touch up random pieces with a curling iron or leave things exactly how they are.

Alternatively, for mums with straight and sleek hair, freshly washed hair sprayed with a small amount of sea salt spray* and plaited into a braid before bed will achieve easy waves in the morning.

Effortless Volume

As a busy mum, the last thing you want is your hair in your face. While it’s easy to throw it up into a messy bun when heading out the door, opting for a full and bouncy high ponytail is an easy and stylish alternative.

This style works best with longer, thick hair, but if you have straight, sleek locks, slightly tease your secured ponytail for extra volume, then finish with hairspray.

Play With Accessories

Keeping cute hair accessories on hand will guarantee you have a quick and easy option for elevating any simple hairstyle on any day. Wear hat or a baseball cap on top of a low messy bun, with face-framing pieces complementing your style.

Alternatively, you can try a chic French braid with a flowy and feminine bandana tied around your head for an added stylish element. Choosing the right accessory can also hide any unwanted frizz and greasy roots when you haven’t quite reached hair washing day and your dry shampoo* has run out.

Keep Hair Maintenance Minimal

As appealing as cutting an edgy fringe or getting the platinum blonde hair of your dreams may be, taking a trip to the hair salon every few weeks to maintain your new look is sadly not practical for most mums.

So, the next time you visit the hairdressers, take the opportunity to speak to your stylist about the best cuts and colours for your hair type that require minimal effort to maintain. That way you can go longer in between visits and still keep your hair looking great and easy to style every day.

Which was your favourite hair hack? Are there any hair styling tips you love that aren’t listed here? What’s your go-to hairstyle on days when you have no time?

I’m not a parent but I still needed some of these tips and tricks, I don’t typically know what to do with my hair and just kind of leave it to go a bit wild — I like the idea of washing it at night as I can style it straightaway upon getting up which may help!

I really liked your ideas of taking advantage of quiet time at night to invest in hair. This is an easy way to make sure there is time enough to properly care for our hair, while not allowing the clutter of a busy day from getting in the way.
