Why Visit Amsterdam in Winter?

Winter is the perfect time for romantic getaways and Amsterdam is the ideal place for that. Snuggle up with your partner as you navigate your way around the canals and find cosy bars or cafes to warm up in and share a drink.

Amsterdam is an extremely popular tourist hotspot, which means it can get exceptionally overcrowded in Spring and Summer. When you go in Winter, however, it’s much more peaceful and you can enjoy the city at your own pace. The weather in Amsterdam during Winter also sits below 5°C so you can rock your wonderful Winter looks and post them all over your social media too!

These are just a few of the reasons why people from all over the world flock to see what the Dutch capital has to offer them. If this sounds like a trip you’d like to go on too, then it’s easy to find suitable transport to get you there. Here are some suggestions for what to do in Amsterdam once you’ve arrived.

What Can You Do in Winter in Amsterdam?

There are many things to do in Winter in Amsterdam but the following are the ones that will give you memories to last a lifetime:

Visit An Ice-Skating Rink

Winter means ice-skating in Amsterdam and what better activity to do than beating your partner or friends in a race around the Vondelpark? Or take it slow and enjoy the scenery whilst you glide gently around the ice.

Learn All About Amsterdam’s History

Amsterdam’s history is a rich one and there are lots of museums in the city to tell the tale. Explore them all or select the few that sound most interesting to you. Visiting museums in Amsterdam in Winter can also be a great way to get out of the cold for a little bit and learn whilst you warm up.

Indulge in Dutch Cuisine

There are many delicacies in Amsterdam but the oliebollen may just be the most famous in the city. These pasties are very similar to doughnuts and tend to be filled with raisins with a hefty helping of sugar on top. Delicious 🙂

Catch a Football Match at the Johan Cruyff Arena

Football is sacred to many Dutch people, which is why going to watch a game is crucial when you’re here – even if you don’t really like the sport (!) The famous Ajax team plays here and they’ve enjoyed a wealth of success over the years. Expect top-notch football and an electric atmosphere when you get inside in the footballing arena.

Enjoy a Canal Cruise

Amsterdam is known for its canals that criss-cross the city, and a canal cruise is really a must-do when visiting. Choose from one of these best canal cruises in Amsterdam and you’ll be able to see sights such as Anne Frank’s House, Central Station, and many beautiful typical Amsterdam houses along the way. As many boats offer glass roofed boats, you’ll still be able to enjoy the cruise even when it’s cold outside. And it’s a wonderful way to take a rest from walking around all day.

As you can see, there are plenty of fun-filled adventures to be had in the Dutch capital. Why not make an itinerary before you go, so you can get the most out of your trip? That way, you can enjoy as many activities as possible when you visit Amsterdam in Winter – just make sure you wrap up warmly whilst you’re there!

🌈 Our beloved hobo has taken his last journey. Yes 🌈 Our beloved hobo has taken his last journey. Yesterday evening we had to say farewell to Ginger at nearly 21 years old.

13 years ago he wandered into our greenhouse and decided ours was his new home. So many memories:

😻 He saw us through Buzz, Lily, and Jester, and the arrivals of Spooky, Loki, and Lyra.
😻 Always the most chilled cat, not interested in fighting any other cats, ours or visitors.
😻 Greediest cat ever, not even willing to share with the resident hedgehogs. He could hear the sound of someone walking into the kitchen from 5 miles away.
😻 An inveterate bin diver – our neighbours got used to seeing their recycling spread across the road after he’d gone searching for food.
😻 Always commandeering the warmest spot in the garden or house.
😻 Putting up with Spooky always seeking him out and snuggling up with him.
😻Somehow generating more heat than a volcano, so we could never tolerate him on our laps for more than 10 minutes, we’d have to move him next to us instead.
😻 Always knowing when any of us needed comfort or company and snuggling up to offer purring support.

RIP, Ginger, thank you for choosing us, we were privileged to have you as part of our family, and you leave the biggest hole in all our hearts. 😿

If you don’t have any of these perennials in your outside space, you’re missing a trick.

Happy in pots, baskets, and the ground, ours have survived frost, snow and can’t be beaten for fabulously cheerful pops of colour at this time of year. Highly recommended! 👌
