AD | Staycations are becoming more and more popular these days. And the vibrant and fun-filled city of Liverpool is definitely a top pick for families. As well as the birthplace of The Beatles, a certain successful football team, and an 1980’s soap (hands up, who else watched Brookside?), it boasts centuries of maritime history, and is a brilliant place to eat, shop and soak up culture. If you’re tempted to visit the 2008 European City of Culture, here are eight reasons Liverpool is fab for families.
#01. Ferry cross the Mersey
Taking a Ferry cross the Mersey with Mersey Ferries is one of the best ways to see Liverpool. And you can sing the Gerry and the Pacemakers hit of the same name as you cruise along (look it up on YouTube if you’re too young to remember).
#02. Royal Albert Dock
Royal Albert Dock is one of Liverpool’s best-known places to meet, eat and indulge in arty pursuits. You can pick up everything from artisan candles to designer trainers in chic boutiques, while the younger children are satisfied with attractions like Mattel Play, where they’ll meet characters like Bob the Builder and Thomas the Tank Engine.
#03. FACT
FACT is a cool city-centre cinema in the trendy Ropewalks sector. It shows specialist arthouse movies for adults and mainstream blockbusters during kids club sessions for junior movie fans. Their café sells tasty treats too, so it’s a great place to spend an afternoon.
#04. Knowsley Safari
Knowsley Safari is around 12 miles outside Liverpool by car via the M62. But it’s worth the journey to experience a 5 mile safari journey where you’ll get up close and personal with animals that kids love — like Amur tigers, ostriches, eagles and baboons. As a huge tiger fan, this is something our daughter would love to do.
#05. The Interesting Eating Company
Holidays are a time when you might allow your kids slightly more sweet treats than usual — in which case, dining at The Interesting Eating Company will win you boundless Brownie points. Children will love all the tropical shakes, stacked pancakes and much more.
#06. World Museum & War Museum
Visiting the World Museum unlocks a universe of discoveries for children with a thirst for knowledge. They can learn about heavenly bodies in the planetarium, see life-sized dinosaur skeletons and fossilized eggs, and examine creepy crawlies in the bug house. Flora would be in absolute heaven here. And one for the dads, the Western Approaches War Museum is where you can visit the wartime bunker in which the British Armed Forces drew up their tactics and secrets to aid the Allied victory.
#07. Liverpool schools
If you’re moving to Liverpool for work, study, or simply because you love the city, you’ll probably want to find schools with the best reputations and performance records. According to The Schools Guide, The Blue Coat school, The Belvedere Academy and Liverpool College are all five-star rated, as are Wirral’s Birkenhead School and Upton Hall School FCJ. So plenty top schools and lovely locations to choose from.
#08. Liverpool John Lennon Airport
Liverpool John Lennon Airport has a firm focus on family travel. Breastfeeding is welcomed throughout the terminal, there’s eclectic shopping for your retail fix, and Frankie & Benny’s is a favourite pitstop for Italian-American treats like calzones and classic meatballs that satisfy everyone. You’ll also find Liverpool airport parking from Looking4.com * and fast track security reduce stress even further.
So that’s eight reasons why Liverpool is so good for families. But there are bound to be many more – what are your Liverpool family tips and favourite activities? Please let me know what I’ve missed off the list!

You’re very welcome and I’m with you on Knowsley, it looks amazing!
My last visit to Liverpool was a bit wet and wild, but we did have a great time seeing Def Leppard at the arena.
Oooh, I bet that was amazing, lucky you! 🙂
I’ve actually never been to Liverpool but this has changed my mind. From the Mersey cruise to the museum’s and the safari park, it definitely sounds like a city I’d enjoy exploring. Even though I’m not a huge Beatles fan it would be interesting to see some of the sites related to the band.
You can’t beat a good river cruise, can you? It’s such a lovely way of seeing the sights. Like you, I’m not a massive Beatles fan but with a history like that, you’d have to visit Penny Lane 🙂
When I think of Liverpool, I automatically think of a big city with football. Glad to hear that this place is family friendly and that it offers a variety of activities to do! Thanks for sharing, Lisa!
I know, that’s probably the first thing that springs to many minds! But yes, there’s masses for families to do, so well worth a visit if you’re ever over here 🙂
My mum went to Liverpool a few years ago and loved it! She loved the Beatles so saw the museum, John Lennon’s house etc. She has always wanted to go back. So we are hopefully planning a trip. She did say all the schools she saw had an outstanding from Ofsted and it looked really clean and pretty. I didn’t know about some of the other interesting places in Liverpool. Thank you for sharing Lisa xxx
Liverpool sounds absolutely perfect for her – I hope you get to see some of the other sights the city has to offer in due course then, and that you blog about it too! xxx
You have given me reasons to visit Liverpool. I will keep in mind when we plan our Europe tour some day. Love the pictures too. As usual lovely post Lisa. 🙂
