AD | If I were to ask you how you feel about Winter, what would you say?  I know Autumn (or Fall depending where you live) always garners plenty of buzz and love.  But her colder sister season, Winter, has plenty about her to love and revel in as well.  So I want to share 30 inspiring Winter quotes to remind you why we should embrace this beautiful season as a time of magic, hope, and renewal.  And please, oh please, let it snow this year too!

30 Inspiring Winter Quotes

Unlike my previous post about inspirational Autumn quotes, I found it quite hard to collate 30 inspirational Winter quotes.  Which surprised me, because after all, Winter means Christmas for half the world!  And it’s surely the most magical of seasons when the snow falls, don’t you think?

Motivational Winter Quotes

But Winter also teaches us about courage in adversity, perseverance, and in its own way, about hope.  So, here are 10 motivational Winter quotes that I hope will inspire you too.

“Winter forms our character and brings out our best.” – Tom Allen

“The pine stays green in winter… wisdom in hardship.” – Norman Douglas

“If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant: if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome.” – Anne Bradstreet

“Let us love winter, for it is the spring of genius.” – Pietro Aretino

“Sometimes, you need to revamp yourself over the winter, participate in things that make you appreciate what you have.” – Hannah Teter

“The communities and countries … whose people have the longest average lifespans … Canada, Sweden, and Iceland [are] places with inhospitable winter weather.” – Chris Hadfield

“What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness.” – John Steinbeck

“My old grandmother always used to say, summer friends will melt away like summer snows, but winter friends are friends forever.” – George R.R. Martin, “A Feast for Crows”

“In the depth of winter, I finally learned that there was in me an invincible summer.” – Albert Camus

“Winter is a season of recovery and preparation.” – Paul Theroux

Snowy Sayings About Winter

Of course, some of the best quotes about Winter reference the snow.  And I’m very much in agreement, as is Flora, who gets excited at the merest dusting of white.  These are the best 7 snowy sayings I’ve found that encapsulate what we love about snow in Winter.

“There’s just something beautiful about walking on snow that nobody else has walked on. It makes you believe you’re special.” – Carol Rifka Brunt

“Snowflakes are kisses from heaven.” – Unknown

“A snowflake is one of God’s most fragile creations, but look what they can do when they stick together!” – Unknown

“To appreciate the beauty of a snowflake it is necessary to stand out in the cold.” – Aristotle

“Snow flurries began to fall and they swirled around people’s legs like house cats. It was magical, this snow globe world.” – Sarah Addison Allen

“A snowball in the face is surely the perfect beginning to a lasting friendship.” – Markus Zuzak

“I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps it says, ‘Go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again.'” – Lewis Carroll

30 inspiring Winter quotes - bare trees, sunlight, snow

A Gardener’s Delight

As a gardener, you might be surprised to hear Winter is one of my favourite seasons.  But when all the lush colour and foliage is gone, I can see the shape of our garden more clearly.  Where there are gaps, what needs attention, and there’s a clean simplicity that’s almost elegant.  And I’m not alone in finding this time of year lends itself to some inspiring Winter quotes.

“In seed time learn, in harvest teach, in winter enjoy.” – William Blake

“I prefer winter and fall, when you feel the bone structure of the landscape — the loneliness of it; the dead feeling of winter. Something waits beneath it, the whole story doesn’t show.” – Andrew Wyeth

“The color of springtime is flowers; the color of winter is in our imagination.” – Terri Guillemets

Cold Comforts

Winter’s all about snuggling up with a hot drink in front of a toasty fire, either at home or in a cosy pub, isn’t it?  Because Winter is a season that lends itself to self care and nurture.  As well as admiring the magic Nature has wrought, from the warmth and safety of our cosy nests.  So, what do you think of these 7 Winter positive quotes to remind you of the beauty of this season?

“Winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth, for the touch of a friendly hand and for a talk beside the fire: it is time for home.” – Edith Sitwell

“We feel cold, but we don’t mind it, because we will not come to harm. And if we wrapped up against the cold, we wouldn’t feel other things, like the bright tingle of the stars, or the music of the aurora, or best of all the silky feeling of moonlight on our skin. It’s worth being cold for that.”
― Philip Pullman

“In winter, the stars seem to have rekindled their fires, the moon achieves a fuller triumph, and the heavens wear a look of a more exalted simplicity.” – John Burroughs

“The cold never bothered me anyway.” – Queen Elsa

“Of all the seasons, winter is the most conducive to the great art of dormancy. This art requires an appreciation of semi-consciousness: the beautiful and necessary prelude to sleep – a special pleasure in itself that is all too often neglected, under-valued or looked down upon.” – Michael Leunig

“Winter is not a season, it’s a celebration.” – Anamika Mishra

“There’s nothing better than curling up with a good book and sitting in front of the fire on winter evenings.” – Leo Sayer

Winter Wit

I couldn’t resist including a couple of funny quotes about Winter.  George is spot on, as long as the wrapping looks good, who cares about the underneath!  And I don’t think I need to explain why I’m including Billy, do I? 🙂

“Winter dressing is all about having chic outerwear.” – George Kotsiopoulos

“There are two seasons in Scotland: June and Winter.” – Billy Connolly

My Favourite Winter Quote

OK, I know this is the third quote I’ve included from John Burroughs, but I think he absolutely nails how I feel about Winter.  Sometimes the cold crisp air is like a shot of adrenaline that wakes you up to the natural beauty of what’s around you.  There’s truly something magical about Winter that really makes me feel alive.

“It is the life of the crystal, the architect of the flake, the fire of the frost, the soul of the sunbeam. This crisp winter air is full of it.” – John Burroughs

So there we are, 30 inspiring Winter quotes to share the magic of this rather maligned season.  While I’m definitely a fan of sunshine and warmth, these 30 quotes about Winter really do express what I love about her.  On reflection, I think it’s probably to do with being a gardener as much as anything, and learning to work with rather than against seasonal shifts.  And allowing the healing power of Nature to work her own special magic too.

Thanks for this. I’ve pinned it for future reference.

I am not a big fan of winter but, I think I would miss it if I didn’t have it. I enjoy the change of seasons. I love the quote that you wouldn’t enjoy spring as much if you didn’t have winter.

I especially liked this part of the quote:

And the one from the gardener where he says there’s a clean simplicity that’s almost elegant.

I love these winter quotes! The quote “There are two seasons in Scotland: June and Winter” reminds me of a quote about Texas – There are only two seasons in Texas: hot and hotter haha but it did actually snow in many parts of Texas this year!
In Denmark, it has been snowing on and off and my daughter got to build a little snowman and go sledding!

Wow, you don’t associate Texas with snow, that’s amazing! And your daughter is lucky, Flora is SO boot faced we haven’t had any snow so far this year 🙂

Beautiful post and quotes. But, me I am not a fan of the cold and snow. It’s beautiful to look at from inside though.

If you don’t have any of these perennials in your outside space, you’re missing a trick.

Happy in pots, baskets, and the ground, ours have survived frost, snow and can’t be beaten for fabulously cheerful pops of colour at this time of year. Highly recommended! 👌
