AD | Close your eyes and picture the scene. The Adriatic Sea gently rocking your charter catamaran in Croatia, the Croatian sun warm on your skin, and the wind steering you down one of the world’s finest coastlines. But sailing from Zadar to Dubrovnik on a catamaran doesn’t have to be just a dream. Whether you’re an experienced seafarer or an enthusiastic novice, this trip offers the right mix of unwinding, discovering, and getting to know the native culture up close.
What’s the Difference Between a Charter Catamaran and a Yacht?
While catamarans and yachts offer different features, they both offer luxurious and enjoyable experiences on the water.
Catamaran: A catamaran has two parallel hulls connected by a wider deck, making it a dual-hull vessel. This design provides greater stability, reducing the rolling motion, and giving a smoother ride, especially in rough seas. Catamarans generally have a shallower draft, allowing them to navigate in shallower waters. They’re popular for leisure cruising as they offer more deck space and living area, making them ideal for social gatherings or longer voyages.
Yacht: A yacht typically has a single hull (monohull) and is often more streamlined, although it can experience more pronounced rolling and pitching in waves. However, yachts are often faster and more agile, particularly when under sail. They’re associated with luxury and are often used for both short trips and extended voyages. And they come in a wide range of sizes, from smaller day yachts to superyachts equipped with all the amenities for a luxurious experience.
Setting Sail from Zadar
Begin your adventure and set sail in Zadar, Croatia where the old town offers antiquated Roman relics alongside with modern art creations before you embark on an opulent catamaran. Make sure you experience the Sea Organ, an unusual architectural work, and the nearby Sun Salutation, which epitomises the splendid natural Croatian vista., before you hoist your sails.
Island Hopping: Kornati and Šolta
Leaving Zadar for Dubrovnik, your path is peppered with many islands. Your first stop should be the Kornati Archipelago, a specially preserved national park. It’s an ideal spot for an underwater adventure, or you can simply relax and take in the views from your catamaran deck.
Then set your compass to the south and run towards Šolta island. Coupled with untouched sandy seashores, this is another stop you can’t afford to miss. And the best part is you can anchor up in a range of untouched locations.
Exploring the Dalmatian Coast
Further down the coastline is Hvar, the “Queen of the Dalmatian Islands”, alive with party-seekers, stunning beaches, fields of lush lavender, and age-old strongholds. Mooring up in the vibrant harbour, after strolling through the medieval town, you can also head inland to the vineyards and sample some of the finest wines in the region.
Shrouded in myth, Korcula takes a step back into times past. With claims of being Marco Polo’s cradle, it’s a mix of slender alleys, age-old plazas, and picturesque sands. Don’t pass over the chance to savour an evening meal featuring a range of delicious regional specialities.
The Final Stretch to Dubrovnik
As your charter catamaran cruise nears its end, you’ll approach the majestic city of Dubrovnik. Hailed as the Adriatic’s gem, the old town holds a spot on UNESCO’s World Heritage list. The age-old walls and beautiful architecture against the backdrop of the sea is truly a sight to behold.
Meander along the city walls, visit the historic forts, and lose yourself in the maze of streets filled with quaint cafes and shops. Or you could explore Dubrovnik by yacht!
The Adriatic coast with its crisp blue waters lying below a townscape of reddish clay rooftops offers very special views from the deck as you moor up on hidden beaches and in tucked-away coves – perfect for a cool dive or tranquil moments away from the everyday hustle and bustle.
Seeing Dubrovnik via yacht combines the opulence of a cruise with the history and stunning views of the Dalmatian Coast. And your shipboard experience also offers gourmet cuisine crafted by a personal chef. So, you can savour local wines and soak up the Mediterranean sun while voyaging to surrounding islands.
Whether you opt for a charter catamaran or a yacht, if you’re looking for your next Mediterranean holiday, away from all the usual crowded tourist hotspots, chartering a sea voyage around Croatia is the perfect way to escape and build some travel memories to last a lifetime, don’t you think?

You really can’t put a foot wrong, doing a charter like this.
Agreed! So when are you booking your first charter, Bev? 🙂
Your catamaran trip from Zadar to Dubrovnik sounds amazing! 🇭🇷 The Croatian coastline looks absolutely enchanting. Thanks for sharing the travel inspiration!
Doesn’t it just – especially with the way the weather is in the UK just now!
Croatia is a beautiful country, I have been to it several times. You must always take airy clothes with you, because there are really hot days there.
That’s really helpful to know, thank you, Mark, will bear that in mind.
Quite a long time ago, my Mum and Stepdad went on holiday to Croatia, and they really loved it. They still speak about how beautiful the nature around them were. I think doing a charter would be a wonderful way to see this lovely place!
Ah, that’s lovely to hear, Molly. Yes, everyone I speak to who’s visited Croatia always sings its praises, so a charter cruise is definitely on my bucket list now!
Sailing along the Dalmatian Coast in a catamaran would be such a dream vacation. Your lovely photos really make this area come to life. Also, I do love the idea of less pitching and a smoother sail offered by the catamaran. This might be easier for a first timer on the water like myself.
Croatia has been on my bucket list for some time now, as an alternative to Greece. There’s such a variety of sights to see and things to experience – and I agree, I think I’d opt for a catamaran for a smoother ride too.
A trip in that location with a catamaran sounds amazing. I have never travelled with a catamaran before and that would surely make the trip more interesting. I have never been to Croatia either. 🙂
I haven’t holidayed on a catamaran either, or been to Croatia – yet!
