We usually think of Valentine’s Day as an opportunity to celebrate love / shameless February marketing opportunity for retailers (delete as appropriate), but did you know there’s a darker origin story too? Before I get into that, and because it’s probably not why you clicked to read this post (!) I wanted to share a recipe for a Sweet Valentine’s Grazing Board. Because whether you’re planning a romantic evening for two, a gathering with friends, or an indulgent evening of self-care for one at home, this quick and easy dessert grazing platter is the perfect sweet treat.
How to Make A Valentine’s Board for Sharing
What do you serve on a grazing board? There are lots of options, depending on whether you’re going for a savoury, sweet, or mixed selection. Although my Valentine’s Day grazing board ideas and suggestions are for a sweet platter, the principles can easily be adapted for a cheese or charcuterie board. Which leads me on to…
What’s the Difference Between a Charcuterie Board and a Grazing Board?
Dessert grazing boards are often referred to as charcuterie boards but, technically, charcuterie boards will have meat on them. And as this recipe is for a sweet Valentine’s grazing board, meat (and cheese) don’t feature.
Crafting a Valentine’s Grazing Board – 6 Easy Steps
Choose Your Board
Start with a large serving platter, a heart shaped charcuterie board, or a simple wooden slab as the base for your grazing board. Make sure it’s big enough to fit an assortment of treats, but not so big that it overwhelms the table. I love this gorgeous heart-shaped Valentine’s platter from Etsy*. Tip: if you’ve got lots of small items, you might want to opt for a board with a lip or rim, to stop them rolling away.
Choose Your Sweets
Next, choose a variety of sweet treats to add to your grazing board. These could include chocolates, candies, cookies, macaroons, and mini cupcakes*. Aim for a mix of different colours, shapes, and flavours to make your board visually appealing. Don’t forget to add some Valentine’s-themed sweets like heart-shaped candies or chocolate-covered strawberries for that authentic touch.
* Obviously do go for vegan or gluten-free options if you prefer.
Add Fresh Fruits
To balance out the sweetness, include fresh fruits on your board. Strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and sliced oranges not only add a pop of colour but also offer a slightly healthier element to the board, to balance out the other sweets (!).
Include Dipping Sauces or Spreads
Nutella, caramel sauce, whipped cream, and raspberry jam are popular choices. Serve them in small bowls or ramekins, making them easily accessible for dipping or spreading onto the treats.
Decorate and Arrange
Once you’ve chosen all your treats, it’s time to arrange them on the board. Start by placing larger items like cupcakes or cookies first. Then, fill in the gaps with smaller candies or chocolate pieces. Experiment with different heights, and textures, and layouts.
Final Touches
To add the finishing touches to your sweet Valentine’s grazing board, sprinkle some edible decorations such as heart-shaped sprinkles, edible flowers, rose petals, or gold dust over the food. Don’t forget to add a few personal touches, such as love notes or love quotes on small cards.
So, those are some ideas for you – now onto the recipe featured in the photos.
Quick and Easy Sweet Valentine’s Grazing Board Recipe
Prep Time: 15 minutes| Chill Time: 20 minutes | Total Time: 35 minutes.
Chocolate Covered Pretzel Ingredients (all from Amazon*)
- 30 pretzel sticks*
- 1 bag white chocolate décor melts*
- 1 bag red chocolate décor melts*
- Pink and white heart sprinkles*
Additional Ingredients (depending on the size of your board)
- Strawberries
- Nutella
- Red M&Ms
- Chocolate covered raisins
- Candy shoelaces or twizzlers
- Marshmallow sticks
- Pink wafers
- Chocolate wafers
Directions
- Set up a dipping station to make both decorating and cleaning up easier. Place the sprinkles into individual dishes, line a baking sheet with parchment paper, have another dish to catch the excess sprinkles, and find a tall kitchen glass. A pint glass is perfect.
- Add the white melting chocolates to a microwave safe bowl. Follow the directions on your bag to melt the chocolates. Transfer the melted chocolate to your tall glass.
- Dip each pretzel rod into the middle of the glass. Twirl each rod around until it’s covered with chocolate. To cover more of the length of the rod in chocolate, tilt the glass as shown, and twirl the rod carefully.
- Lift up the rod and allow any excess chocolate to drip off.
- Add your sprinkles and place it on a parchment lined baking sheet.
- Repeat until half of the pretzel rods have been dipped.
- Repeat steps above for the red melting chocolates and the remaining pretzel rods.
- Place the baking sheet in the refrigerator for 20 minutes to allow all the chocolate to set.
- Arrange all your ingredients together on your grazing board and enjoy!
The Origins of Valentine’s Day
Before you settle down to enjoy your sweet Valentine’s grazing board, here’s that darker origin story I mentioned earlier. Apparently, Emperor Claudius II of Rome executed a priest named Valentine on February 14th, for defying a Roman decree forbidding soldiers from marrying. Legend has it that he fell in love with the jailer’s daughter and, when he was taken out for execution, he sent her a love letter signed, “from your Valentine.”
Additionally, the pagan fertility ritual, Lupercalia, took place on the Ides (15th) of February each year. This was dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, as well as to the Roman founders Romulus and Remus. The ceremony paired unmatched couples for the year ahead, and these matches often ended in marriage.
As is traditional when religion gets the upper hand, the Church decided to abolish this pagan festival and convert it into a Christian celebration. So, they claimed 14th February as Saint Valentine’s Day, thus establishing this feast day on the Catholic Calendar of Saints.
Without Missing a Beat…
I hope you enjoyed both this indulgently tempting sweet Valentine’s grazing board recipe and the interesting thoughts about the origin of Valentine’s Day. 😊 All you need now is a glass of champagne or a cup of hot chocolate to accompany your edible creation. I’m sure you can heart-ly wait to get started…

Ooh this is brilliant and great for sharing with friends! Where I come from Valentine’s was never about couples and romantic love but all kinds of love, especially between friends. We don’t actually even call it Valentine’s, but Friends’ Day (doesn’t work in English, does it? :D) This is such a fun addition to the day!

I love this grazing board, and yes, many people would call it a charcuterie board, but I wouldn’t want a dessert board with meat and cheese haha. For Valentine’s Day, we had chocolate fondue with fresh fruit, pound cake, cookies, pretzels, and marshmallows.
Oh, that sounds delicious, Karalee, love the salty/sweet combo, with some healthy fresh fruit!
Your Valentine’s day grazing board is so gorgeous. You created the perfect festive display for this fun, romantic holiday. I especially loved your idea to use a heart shaped board.
Thank you, Heidi, that’s very kind – I hope you had a wonderful Valentine’s Day 🙂
Goodness me! This board is insane! I’m surprised you were able to finish it. I could not have completed this board for I’d have eaten the wafers, twizzlers and M&M’s (especially the peanut ones).
You are so funny, Bev! I found the fruit hardest to resist actually 🙂
