AD | As any parent knows, most children love to do fun things, sing and play. And when you’re planning a trip, we’ve found that including those elements makes for a much easier and more pleasant travelling experience. They don’t get bored and will enjoy the travel as much as you do. If you’re holidaying in the UK, South London and its variety of family-friendly attractions are perfect for that. Here are some fun things to do in South London with children.
Shakespeare’s Globe
The Globe theatre is located on the south bank of the River Thames, and usually offers activities for children. It’s a fascinating place to visit, even if you don’t go to see a play. You can reach it from a pleasant stroll along South Bank, the promenade on the south bank of the Thames that runs from the London Eye to Tower Bridge in London. It’s a great way of getting some exercise, as well as introducing some wonderful attractions for children in London.
South Bank
You can walk from one end of South Bank to the other without steps and almost without having to cross a street. So walking here with children, or even with a baby stroller, is one of the best and cheapest things to do during a family trip to London.
In the area closest to the London Eye there are always street shows and plenty of flea markets. The Royal Festival Hall is close by too, where you’ll find a first floor restaurant overlooking the river, which is often frequented by families.
Crazy Golf courses
There are a couple of mini golf venues in South London that can turn a long day walking around into a brilliantly fun evening. The Battersea and Peckham Plonk Crazy Golf venues in South London attract families all year round, so if Crazy Golf is your thing, you can find out more at plonkgolf.co.uk*.
Royal Museums, Greenwich
With its riverside setting, famous market, and World Heritage status, Greenwich makes a great free day out in itself. But this corner of south-east London is also home to some fabulous attractions. The Royal Museums comprise the National Maritime Museum, the Royal Observatory, the Queen’s House gallery, and the wonderful restored Cutty Sark. There really is something for everyone here.
Imperial War Museum, Lambeth
This is a must-see for families with children of any age. The IWM houses many military vehicles, historic documents and some fantastic art galleries on the top floor. And don’t forget to stroll around the gardens where you’ll find a huge section of the Berlin Wall and a pair of giant naval guns too.
Peppa Pig World
Peppa Pig World is a theme park located in Paulton’s Park, in Hampshire, just south of London. If you have enough time, it’s a great idea to visit this park that isn’t too far from the heart of the city. Younger children will love it, especially if they’ve grown up with Peppa Pig cartoons. We took Flora when she was four and she absolutely LOVED it. But don’t worry, away from Peppa, there are plenty of attractions for older children and adults as well.
Dulwich
If you decide not to go to the city centre, one of the loveliest neighbourhoods to take the whole family to is Dulwich, south of London. It has parks with playground areas, beautiful streets, a sports centre, a lake to navigate, and more. Bonus fact: its crime rate is among the lowest in the whole city of London!
Have you visited any of these South London attractions? What ones would you recommend as well? And what are your top tips for travelling and fun days out with children?
